JSX ERJ-145 Returns to Denver Due to Smoke in Cockpit

A JSX ERJ-145 departing for Burbank, CA declared an emergency and returned to Denver (BJC) after reporting smoke in the cockpit on 20 October.

A JSX Embraer ERJ-145 operating scheduled service to Burbank, CA made a precautionary return to Denver, CO after reporting smoke in the cockpit on 20 October 2024.

JSX flight XE550, operated by an Embraer ERJ-145, had been given clearance for takeoff from runway 12L Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (BJC). The aircraft was performing the scheduled service to Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR).

Shortly after departure, flight crew reported the presence of smoke in the cockpit. The climb was subsequently terminated below 10,000 feet, and a precautionary return to the origin airport was requested.

Flight crew declared an emergency and squawked transponder code 7700 following the report.

A direct return was expedited and the flight landed without further incident on runway 30R, just over ten minutes after its initial departure.

According to the online source Aviation Herald, flight crew had advised ATC that the smoke had dissipated by the time it made its return approach.

The air operator mustered a replacement aircraft to carry out the scheduled service to Hollywood Burbank Airport.

Flight data shows that the flight XE550 had made a late departure out of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport on 20 October. Actual time of departure was logged as 1125 local time. Scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 1015 local time.

Following its departure from runway 12L, flight crew terminated the climb at 9000 feet before negotiating a direct return.

The aircraft conducting the XE550 service to Burbank was an Embraer ERJ-145, registered N922JX. This is a twenty-five year old regional jet belonging to the carrier JSX. It has been an operational service with the air operator since August 2022.

Prior to its current service it operated with other US carriers. Notably it was operated by Continental Express from its initial delivery from the factory in December 1999.
