Queensland Tourism Destinations
Jetstar has introduced a new Queensland direct flight service connecting Cairns and the Sunshine Coast (Maroochydore). It marks a significant milestone for the low-cost carrier.
The inaugural route, which commenced operations on 3 December 2024, will operate up to four times weekly, offering travelers more than 71,000 budget-friendly seats annually.
Jenn Armor, Jetstar’s Executive Manager of Customer Experience, was pleased to see the inauguration of the new route. “Cairns and the Sunshine Coast represent two of Australia’s most spectacular holiday destinations,” she explained.
“These regions boast stunning beaches, incredible swimming spots, and landscapes that truly capture the essence of Queensland’s natural beauty.”
The strategic route expansion comes at an opportune time, with the holiday season approaching and travelers seeking affordable travel options.
Armor highlighted the broader context of Jetstar’s network growth, noting that this launch is part of an ambitious expansion plan. “We’re entering an exciting fortnight for Jetstar, with four new routes set to be introduced,” she revealed.
The airline has already demonstrated its commitment to accessible travel, selling more than 2 million seats for under $100 to and from Queensland this year.
Cairns and Sunshine Coast Airports Welcome Move
Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills warmly welcomed the new service, emphasizing its potential economic and social benefits. “This route does more than connect destinations – it brings people closer together,” Mills said.
He explained that the service would provide families with an affordable and convenient way to unite during the holiday season and beyond.
Moreover, the new flights are expected to significantly boost regional tourism, allowing domestic and international travelers to explore two distinctly different but equally captivating Queensland destinations.
Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker added depth to the route’s significance. “While both Cairns and the Sunshine Coast are coastal destinations, they offer remarkably unique attractions,” Barker explained.
The direct flights will enable visitors to seamlessly experience Queensland’s diverse offerings, from the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef to the exhilarating surf beaches that define the region.
Summary
The service is particularly advantageous for those with personal connections between the two regions, providing a convenient and cost-effective transportation option for individuals visiting friends and relatives. By reducing travel barriers, Jetstar is making it easier for Australians to explore and connect across different parts of Queensland.
This launch underscores Jetstar’s ongoing commitment to expanding travel opportunities, making domestic travel more accessible, and supporting regional tourism.
As the airline continues to grow its network, travelers can look forward to more affordable and convenient travel options across Australia.
