Jetstar is taking its trans-Tasman network to new heights by adding Cairns as a destination from Christchurch Airport.

This expansion builds on its existing daily direct flights to the Gold Coast and Melbourne. The new route offers New Zealanders an easy escape to Tropical North Queensland’s warm beaches and lush rainforests.

At the same time, it invites Australians to discover the South Island’s stunning landscapes, thrilling adventure activities, and the lively vibe of Christchurch.

Boosting the Trans-Tasman Network

Jetstar currently enjoys a strong presence at the South Island’s Christchurch Airport. The boost in trans-Tasman connectivity with near neighbour Australia strengthens the carrier’s footprint.

Justin Watson, CEO of Christchurch Airport, sees this as a major win for travelers and the local economy. “Jetstar’s new Cairns service is fantastic for the South Island,” he says.

“Kiwis get a simple way to enjoy a tropical getaway, while more Australians can visit our region. This increased connection supports local businesses in tourism, hospitality, and retail, benefiting both New Zealand and Australia.”

The route reflects Jetstar’s growing focus on New Zealand, according to Jenn Armor, Jetstar’s Executive Manager Customer.

“Launching flights between Christchurch and Cairns marks an exciting step for us,” she explains. “We’re making travel more affordable and accessible for millions of New Zealanders.”

“The response from both Kiwis and Aussies has been amazing. Queenslanders can now reach Christchurch in under six hours, which is great for our customers and for the city as we bring in more visitors.”

Supporting the South Island International Hub

This new service strengthens Jetstar’s commitment to expanding travel options for New Zealanders. With flights linking Christchurch to Cairns, the Gold Coast, and Melbourne, the airport solidifies its role as the South Island’s main international hub.

For Kiwis, it’s a chance to trade snowy peaks for sunny shores. For Australians, it’s an invitation to explore a region packed with natural beauty and urban charm.

The addition of Cairns to Jetstar’s network also creates business and economic opportunities. Local businesses gain from the influx of visitors, while travelers enjoy greater flexibility and choice.

Whether it’s a quick tropical break or an adventure across the Tasman, this route makes it easier than ever. Christchurch Airport continues to grow as an international gateway, connecting people and places with every new flight.
