Jetstar B787-8 Makes Emergency Landing in Sydney with Wheel Problem

A Jetstar B787-8 departing for Phuket made an emergency landing at Sydney after one main wheel tyre was damaged on takeoff earlier today.

A Jetstar Boeing 787-8 bound for Phuket made a return and emergency landing at Sydney today after reporting a potential wheel or tyre issue.

Jetstar flight JQ27, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner it had conducted a departure from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled flight to Phuket International Airport (HKT), Thailand.

Shortly after departure, flight crew reported a potential undercarriage issue with the aircraft. And enquiry with the Sydney controller confirmed visually that the undercarriage appeared to be down.

Flight crew elected to make a precautionary return to Sydney Airport and conducted a holding procedure to facilitate fuel dumping. After approximately 2 hours holding to the northwest of Sydney, the aircraft returned. It was able to land without incident on a runway 34L, around 5:00 PM local time. Emergency service vehicles met the aircraft on its arrival as a precaution.

Sydney Airport confirmed that the main runway was closed for 30 minutes to facilitate the priority landing by the Jetstar aircraft. Ground services towed the aircraft to the apron hard standing area after it landed. Airport authorities then carried out a runway inspection.

News footage of the landing showed the aircraft’s right-hand main gear assembly under inspection. JetStar confirmed that one of the 10 main landing gear tyres had been damaged during the initial takeoff, but had not burst.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight JQ27 had departed from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport at 1534 local time on 27 November.

Following its departure, flight crew terminated the climb before entering holding procedures at 8000 feet. Fuel dumping was then carried out before the aircraft made a direct return for a priority emergency landing.

The aircraft conducting the JQ27 service to Phuket was a Boeing 787-8, registered VH-VKH.  This is a 10.4 year old wide body aircraft belonging to the carrier Jetstar. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in August 2014.
