Jetstar Asia has officially launched its direct flight service between Singapore and Colombo, establishing itself as the sole low-cost carrier operating this route.
The inaugural Flight 3K333 departed from Singapore’s Changi Airport on 21 November, advancing the carrier’s regional aspirations. It also marks a significant step in providing affordable travel options to Sri Lanka’s capital.
Jetstar Asia Expansion of Regional Network
The new route represents a strategic expansion of Jetstar Asia’s regional network. It offers travelers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the diverse and rich cultural landscape of Sri Lanka.
With five weekly return flights using modern Airbus A320 aircraft, the service provides travelers with flexible morning and evening departure times. This caters neatly to both leisure and business passengers.
Annually, the airline will make over 90,000 low-fare seats available, creating new travel possibilities for Singaporeans and regional travelers. This initiative not only opens up new travel destinations but also promises to stimulate economic interactions. It potentially boosts tourism and business connections between Singapore and Sri Lanka.
Jetstar Asia CEO John Simeone emphasized the strategic importance of this new destination. “Sri Lanka offers travelers a remarkable experience with its scenic coastlines, diverse landscapes, rich culture, and welcoming hospitality,” he explained.
“Our low-cost flights will make Sri Lanka more accessible, supporting local businesses and providing affordable travel options across Southeast Asia.”
Rebuilding Sri Lanka’s Tourism Sector
The route comes at a particularly opportune time for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, which is actively working to rebuild and expand its international visitor numbers. The direct flights provide a convenient and affordable option for travelers from Singapore, Australia, and other regional markets, potentially accelerating the country’s tourism recovery.
Changi Airport Group’s Executive Vice President Lim Ching Kiat warmly welcomed the new route, highlighting its multiple benefits. “This service expands Jetstar Asia’s regional network and provides more opportunities for exploring Sri Lanka’s beautiful destinations,” Mr. Lim noted.
He emphasized the route’s potential to enhance connectivity, allowing travelers to seamlessly connect through Singapore to other destinations in Southeast Asia and beyond.
Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Chairman Air Chief Marshal (Retd.) Harsha Abeywickrema praised the new connection’s potential for transforming travel experiences. “This route will significantly enhance travel accessibility for both local and international passengers, making it easier to explore Sri Lanka’s unique attractions,” he said.
The connection is expected to simplify travel logistics and encourage more international visitors to discover Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
Sri Lanka Tourism Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam expressed particular optimism about the timing of the new Colombo service.
“We are on track to attract three million tourists by the end of next year,” Mr. Hewawasam stated. “Jetstar Asia’s new route will not only improve accessibility from Singapore but also tap into markets in Australia and the broader region, providing more affordable travel options.”
