A couple in Los Angeles is suing JetBlue Airways after a large block of ice allegedly fell from one of their aircraft. The ice block crashed through the roof of their home, landing inches from their bed.
The incident, which occurred on 1 January 2024, left the couple shaken and caused significant property damage. They claim the ice was “the size of a watermelon” and caused significant property damage and emotional distress.
The January 2024 Incident
According to the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the couple had been in the bedroom of their Inglewood home when they heard a loud crash.
They discovered a solid chunk of ice had penetrated their roof, narrowly missing them. The ice caused substantial damage to the ceiling, walls, and flooring.

The Lawsuit
According to the filing, the complainants have alleged that the ice came from a JetBlue Airbus A321. The aircraft was reportedly operating a flight from Los Angeles to New York.
The flight passed over the complainants’ residence in Inglewood, after departing from Los Angeles international Airport (LAX).
The court filing goes on to cite a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigation into the subject aircraft. The FAA investigation allegedly found the plane had “potable water issues” dating back six months prior to the incident.
The complainants alleged that JetBlue was negligent in its maintenance and operation of the aircraft. The couple claims that the airline failed to properly inspect and de-ice the plane before takeoff, leading to the release of the ice block.
In addition to the negligence claim, the complainants contend that JetBlue is also guilty of trespassing. The filing states that they “did not grant JetBlue permission to allow the large chunk of ice to enter their home or cause damage”.
The couple is now seeking US$1 million damages for property damage, emotional distress, and other related expenses.

JetBlue’s Response
JetBlue has not yet responded to the lawsuit publicly. The airline typically does not comment on pending litigation. However, JetBlue has consistently emphasized its commitment to safety and has rigorous safety protocols in place.
This incident renews concerns about the potential dangers of falling ice from airplanes. While rare, such incidents can have serious consequences, including property damage and injuries.
