JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) has officially launched a new daily service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Presque Isle International Airport (PQI). The inaugural flight touched down in Presque Isle yesterday, heralding increased connectivity for the region.
The new network addition also marks a significant milestone for air travel in Northern Maine.
A Boost for Northern Maine and New Brunswick
This new route is set to broaden travel options for residents of Northern Maine and neighboring New Brunswick, offering seamless access to Boston and beyond. The daily service expands JetBlue’s footprint in New England and providing essential air links to underserved communities.
Dave Jehn, Vice President of network planning and airline partnerships at JetBlue, expressed the airline’s support for the new route. “We are thrilled to bring the long-desired Boston flights back to Presque Isle and the surrounding communities,” Jehn stated.
“This new service exemplifies our dedication to offering high-quality travel options to customers throughout New England, connecting them to the destinations they value most.”
The launch of this route is part of the Essential Air Service program, a initiative designed to maintain air service to smaller communities. JetBlue’s selection for this route by the U.S. Department of Transportation highlights the airline’s reputation for reliability and quality service.
The importance of this new air link was emphasized by Senator Angus King, who underscored the critical role of regional airports in Maine’s infrastructure.
“Maine’s regional airports are vital in connecting our people, local businesses, and communities to services and destinations available in more populous areas,” Senator King remarked.
He went on to describe Presque Isle as a gateway to Northern Maine, known for its vibrant culture and thriving industry.
Supporting Rural Communities
Congressman Jared Golden also weighed in on the significance of the new service, particularly for rural communities. “Maine’s identity is rooted in its small towns and wilderness areas, many of which are far from major air travel hubs,” Golden noted.
He highlighted how the Essential Air Service program at Presque Isle International Airport will benefit both local residents and visitors eager to explore Maine’s natural wonders. This includes Baxter State Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
Local officials have warmly welcomed JetBlue’s arrival. Tyler Brown, Presque Isle City Manager, expressed excitement about the new partnership. He looks forward to the prospect of reliable service from a respected airline.
Ryan D. Pelletier, Aroostook County Administrator, emphasized the potential economic impact of the new route, stating, “Commercial air service is crucial for economic development and vitality in rural areas like ours.”
Presque Isle is situated in the beating heart of Aroostook County. It’s a vibrant community that serves as a regional center for business, healthcare, education, and recreation. The city’s small-town charm, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure opportunities attract thousands of visitors annually. JetBlue’s entry into this market brings its renowned low fares and award-winning service to another corner of New England.
Embraer E190 and Airbus A220
Initially, JetBlue will operate the Presque Isle route using the 100-seat Embraer E190 jet. In 2025, the airline plans to upgrade to the larger 140-seat Airbus A220.
Both aircraft will offer JetBlue’s signature amenities, including spacious legroom and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi. Free snacks and drinks, and personal entertainment screens at every seat add further touches.
The new Boston-Presque Isle route opens up a world of possibilities for travelers. From Boston, passengers can connect to over 50 destinations across the Americas and Europe that JetBlue serves directly.
Additionally, passengers have the benefit of JetBlue’s extensive partner airline network. Travelers can access global destinations with the convenience of single-ticket bookings and through-checked baggage.
This expansion is part of JetBlue’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Northeast. By this winter, the airline will serve 10 destinations across New England, including upcoming service to Manchester, New Hampshire.
Overall, JetBlue is set to increase its seat capacity in the region by 20% compared to the previous year. There will be a notable 10% growth at its Boston Logan focus city. As JetBlue continues to expand its reach, the Boston-Presque Isle route importantly connects communities. It opens up broader options for travelers across New England.
