In the last few moments, Japan Airlines flight JL46, originally bound for Tokyo from Paris, has declared an emergency near Basel.
At the moment, the aircraft is currently heading back to CDG due to the nature of the incident onboard.

UPDATE #1 – Japan Airlines flight JL46, originally bound for Tokyo, looks to be turning back to Paris CDG for a diversion!
UPDATE #2 – JA738J is the aircraft involved in this emergency. It is a 16.4 year old Boeing 777-300ER that was delivered to Japan Airlines back in June 2008.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #3 – At this time, the reason for the emergency is not yet clear. The aircraft is currently at FL200 as it makes its way back to Paris CDG.
UPDATE #4 – JL46 is currently near the Metz area, with the aircraft expected to arrive back into Paris CDG in the next 30 minutes or so.
The airline hasn’t made it clear what the cause is yet.
UPDATE #5 – JL46 has now entered some holds to the north of Nancy, presumably to burn fuel before making the approach into the French airport.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #6 – JL46 continues to hold near Nancy. Unclear when it will leave the hold.
UPDATE #7 – No confirmation from Japan Airlines yet about the reason of the emergency on JL46 between Paris and Tokyo.
UPDATE #8 – JL46 continues to hold. The aircraft is still squawking 7700.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #9 – JL46 has been in the air for over 90 minutes currently. Still holding at this present moment.
UPDATE #10 – The long holding by the aircraft definitely represents a considerable amount of fuel to burn.

UPDATE #11 – Japan Airlines flight JL46, originally bound for Tokyo, has appeared to have exited it’s hold and looks set to return to Paris CDG.
UPDATE #12 – Via the Japan Airlines flight status page, they confirm that JL46 is returning to Paris due to a “maintenance issue” – It is unclear what the nature of that issue is currently.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #13 – JL46 has changed it’s squawk code from 7700 to 6444, indicating the emergency is under control. We will continue to monitor until it lands.
UPDATE #14 – JL46 has commenced a descent from FL200 as the aircraft gets closer to CDG.
UPDATE #15 – JL46 looks to be on final for it’s landing back into Paris CDG.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #16 – TOUCHDOWN! Japan Airlines flight JL46, originally bound for Tokyo, has appeared to have landed safely back into Paris following it’s emergency call.
