Japan Airlines Flight Attendant Suffers Cracked Rib in Turbulence Encounter

A Japan Airlines flight attendant suffered a cracked rib after a flight from Beijing to Tokyo encountered significant turbulence on 4 September.

A Japan Airlines flight attendant was injured when a scheduled flight from Beijing to Tokyo encountered turbulence on 4 September 2024.

Japan Airlines flight JL22, a Boeing 787-9 operating from Beijing, encountered significant in-flight turbulence whilst at cruising altitude of approximately 200 km to the east of Seoul. The aircraft was in South Korean airspace at the time of the encounter.

The lateral movement of the aircraft caused the flight attendant to violently collide with a seat, resulting in fracture to one rib. No other injuries were reported as a result of the turbulence encounter. The aircraft was operating with a complement of 11 crew members and 121 passengers.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight JL22 and made an on-time departure from Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). Time of departure was logged as 1417 local time on 4 September.

The flight had been proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL410 (41,000 feet). It then continued the easterly service to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND). The aircraft was in cruising flight at FL410 when it encountered severe turbulence whilst passing through South Korean airspace.

The flight then continued on flight plan track, landing at Tokyo Haneda at 2029 local time.

The aircraft conducting the JL22 service from Beijing was a Boeing 787-9, registered JA868J. This is an 8.6 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the national carrier Japan Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in February 2016.
