Avincis, a leading provider of emergency aerial services, has been awarded a seven-year contract to operate the Italian Fire Brigade’s fleet of 18 CL-415 Canadair aircraft.
This marks a continuation of Avincis’ long-standing partnership with Italy, spanning over two decades. The contract renewal further solidifies its position as the operator of the world’s largest fleet of these specialized firefighting aircraft.
The Escalating Threat of Wildfires
The renewal of this contract comes amidst a growing concern over the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires across Europe.
Climate change has fueled hotter, drier conditions, creating an environment ripe for devastating blazes. The 2023 wildfire season in Europe saw record-breaking temperatures and unprecedented fire activity, causing widespread destruction and displacement.
Roberto Marcolini, Avincis Managing Director, Italy Fixed Wing Division gave comment on the contract extension. “We are honored to continue serving the people of Italy,” he said.

Avincis Global Network

Avincis operates a global network spanning Europe, Africa, and South America. It fields a fleet of approximately 220 aircraft and over 2,400 highly skilled professionals. The company’s headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal, oversees global operations and maintains rigorous maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) standards.
In Italy, Avincis maintains a robust presence with three permanent and three seasonal bases. The operator has capability to establish additional temporary bases as needed.
Avincis is an active participant in the European civil protection mechanism, RescEU. It has the capability to deploy the Italian Canadair fleet within 24 hours to assist other European countries battling wildfires. Recent missions have included support operations in Portugal, Greece, and Albania.
A network of first-rate maintenance centers strategically located across Italy underpins Avincis’ commitment to operational excellence.
These facilities, equipped with advanced equipment and staffed by a team of over 250 highly skilled professionals. This includes over 100 pilots and technicians, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the fire fighting aircraft.

The CL-415 Canadair: A Firefighting Giant
At the heart of Avincis’ aerial firefighting fleet lies the impressive CL-415 Canadair. This purpose built amphibious aircraft has exceptional fire fighting capability. The aircraft currently sees service fighting wildfires across the globe.
Designed and built specifically for aerial firefighting, the CL-415 features a unique combination of speed, maneuverability, and water scooping capacity.
Its robust construction allows it to operate from various water sources, including lakes, rivers, and even the ocean, enabling rapid response to remote fire locations.
The aircraft’s high wing configuration provides excellent visibility for the crew, while its powerful engines ensure swift deployment and efficient water drops. With a maximum water capacity of 6,137 liters, the CL-415 can deliver a significant volume of water in a single drop, helping to quickly suppress flames and contain the spread of wildfires.
The CL-415’s versatility extends beyond fire fighting. Engineers can modify the aircraft for other roles, such as search and rescue, disaster relief, and humanitarian aid.. This adaptability makes it a valuable asset for governments and organizations worldwide
