After a ten-year absence, ITA Airways has resumed direct flights between Rome and Tripoli, marking a significant step in re-establishing air connectivity with Libya.

The inaugural flight departed from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on Sunday, 12 January 2025, landing at Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport.

This development comes after a decade of suspended operations due to the ongoing civil war in Libya. The resumption of flights signals a potential improvement in security conditions within the country and a renewed focus on diplomatic relations between Italy and Libya.

A Return to Libya

ITA Airways will reportedly operate two direct flights a week from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Tripoli Mitiga International Airport.

Andrea Benassi, ITA Airways general manager gave a statement on the route restoration. “We are proud to inaugurate today our first direct commercial flight between Tripoli and Rome Fiumicino. It strengthens commercial and cultural ties between Libya and Italy in support of bilateral relations between the two countries.”

The re-establishment of this air route holds symbolic importance. As the first major Western European airline to resume flights to Libya in ten years, ITA Airways’ decision reflects a growing confidence in the country’s improving security situation.

While challenges remain, this move signifies a potential turning point in Libya’s path towards stability and recovery.

Economic and Diplomatic Significance

Political unrest and security concerns have dogged Libya since the civil war outbreak in 2014. This followed the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. The unstable situation resulted in several international airlines suspended their scheduled flight services to and from Libya.

The resumption of flights is expected to have a positive impact on both economic and diplomatic ties between Italy and Libya.

Increased air connectivity will facilitate travel for businesspeople, tourists, and those visiting family and friends. This, in turn, could boost trade, investment, and cultural exchange between the two nations.

Moreover, the move underscores Italy’s commitment to supporting Libya’s recovery and reintegration into the international community.

As a former colonial power with significant economic interests in Libya, Italy plays a crucial role in the country’s future.

Challenges and Cautions

Despite the positive developments, challenges remain. Libya continues to grapple with political instability and security concerns. The ongoing conflict has created a complex and volatile environment, and the risk of further instability cannot be ignored.

All parties involved will undoubtedly exercise caution and prioritize the safety and security of passengers and crew. Regular security assessments and a robust contingency plan will be essential to ensure the long-term sustainability of this air route.

A Path Forward

The resumption of flights between Rome and Tripoli represents a significant step forward in the relationship between Italy and Libya.

The European Union currently still has a ban on Libyan civil aviation operations in its airspace.

While challenges remain, this recent development offers a glimmer of hope for a more stable and prosperous future for the North African nation.
