Italy’s national airline, ITA Airways, is gearing up to become part of the Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline network.
The Star Alliance Chief Executive Board (CEB) recently gave the green light for ITA Airways to begin its integration process.
This step follows the airline’s earlier inclusion in the Lufthansa Group this year. Now, ITA Airways is on track to officially join the alliance in early 2026, with preparations moving forward at a brisk pace.
Full Membership in 2026
Theo Panagiotoulias, the CEO of Star Alliance, shared his enthusiasm about the decision. “We expect ITA Airways to become a full member of the Star Alliance network in early 2026,” he said.
“This approval from our board shows the trust our members have in ITA Airways. As Italy’s gateway, the airline will boost our global reach. It will also make travel smoother and more connected for people around the world.”
For ITA Airways, this marks a major milestone. Joerg Eberhart, the airline’s CEO and General Manager, expressed his pride in the achievement.
“Joining Star Alliance is a big moment for us,” he said. “We’re thrilled to bring Italy’s unique excellence to the alliance and expand its worldwide presence. This step forward will let our customers enjoy the benefits of the world’s top airline network in the future.”

Boosting Flights and Connections
Once ITA Airways joins, it will add 360 daily flights to the Star Alliance network. This will strengthen the group’s presence in Europe, especially in key Italian cities like Rome and Milan.
Right now, 16 group airlines already serve these hubs. With the Italian national carrier on board, travelers will have even more options for seamless trips across the continent and beyond.
The Lufthansa Group, a long-time Star Alliance member, is playing a key role in helping ITA Airways settle in. The group is guiding the Italian airline through the integration process, ensuring everything goes smoothly.
Dieter Vranckx, Lufthansa Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, shared in the excitement. “I’m proud that ITA Airways will be the fifth Lufthansa Group airline to join Star Alliance,” he said.
“As their mentor, we’ll work hard to make this transition quick and easy. This membership will open up new travel possibilities for Star Alliance customers. I’m confident ITA Airways will fit perfectly into our network.”

Star Alliance Global Network
When ITA Airways completes its integration, Star Alliance will grow to 26 member airlines. Together, they’ll offer more than 18,000 daily flights, linking 192 countries. This expansion will give travelers even greater flexibility and choice, whether they’re flying for business or leisure.
For Italy, this move highlights the national carrier’s growing role on the global stage. The airline’s addition to Star Alliance will showcase Italian hospitality and style while connecting more people to the world.
As 2026 approaches, both ITA Airways and Star Alliance are eager to see this partnership take flight.
With the integration process now underway, travelers can look forward to new opportunities. From more flight options to personalized travel plans, the carrier’s entry into the major airline group promises to be a winner for air travel.
