Italian flagship carrier ITA Airways and Iceland’s national airline Icelandair have established a new codeshare agreement, flagging a significant boost in European air travel connectivity.

The partnership, set to commence on 20 January 2025, will create seamless travel opportunities across both airlines’ networks.

The historic agreement was formalized at ITA Airways’ Rome Fiumicino headquarters during a signing ceremony attended by key executives from both airlines.

This collaboration represents ITA Airways’ 37th codeshare partnership, highlighting the company’s remarkable growth since its establishment just over three years ago.

Boosting Travel Options between Italy and Iceland

The partnership will significantly enhance travel options between Italy and Iceland, with particular focus on strengthening connections between Rome and Reykjavík.

Travelers will gain access to ITA Airways’ comprehensive domestic network, including major Italian destinations such as Catania, Palermo, Naples, and Venice. The airlines plan to expand their cooperation further by adding codeshare routes through various European gateway cities.

For passengers, this agreement brings notable benefits. Travelers can now purchase a single ticket for journeys involving both airlines and enjoy the convenience of having their luggage checked through to their final destination.

Icelandair currently operates daily flights to both Milan and Rome during the summer season and has announced increased winter service to Rome with four weekly flights.

Andrea Benassi, General Manager of ITA Airways, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “This agreement enhances ITA Airways’ commercial growth strategy. It creates a privileged access route for passengers traveling via Rome Fiumicino and Reykjavik. The partnership demonstrates our commitment to expanding global connectivity for our customers.”

Icelandair’s CEO, Bogi Nils Bogason, shared similar sentiments, highlighting the benefits for their customers. “This partnership with ITA Airways will provide our passengers with convenient connections between our networks.”

“We are particularly excited about introducing our customers to ITA Airways’ extensive route network and excellent service standards.”

The collaboration comes at a strategic time for both airlines as they seek to strengthen their positions in the competitive European aviation market.

For ITA Airways, this partnership represents another step in their rapid expansion strategy. Meanwhile, Icelandair continues to establish itself as a key player in connecting Europe with North America via its Reykjavík hub.

Through Rome Fiumicino, passengers will enjoy comprehensive access to Italian destinations. These include Catania, Palermo, Naples, Bologna, Florence, Bari, Genoa, Trieste, Lamezia Terme, Venice, and Turin.

This extensive network coverage ensures that travelers have multiple options for exploring Italy while benefiting from the combined strengths of both airlines.
