An ITA Airways Airbus A220-300 operating from Genova to Rome, Italy made a precautionary return to the origin airport after an engine emitted smoke on 4 August 2024.
ITA Airways flight AZ1380 had just departed from Genova Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) when the problem arose. Whilst the aircraft was in the early stages of its climb after departure, smoke was observed being emitted from one engine.

As a result, the flight crew terminated the climb and made the decision to return to Genova as a precaution.
Furthermore, a turnaround and direct return was then expedited. Following this, the aircraft landed without incident just under 30 minutes after its initial departure.
Flight Details
The flight data shows that flight AZ1380 bound for Rome Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) made an on-time departure out of Genova at 0707 local time.
Also, the aircraft had set course and was on climb through flight level FL140 (14,000 feet) when flight crew terminated the climb.
Moreover, a return course and immediate descent was carried out. Flight crew did not declare a formal emergency and the subsequent return to the departure airport was carried out under normal operating procedures.
The aircraft conducting the AZ1380 regional service was an Airbus A220-300, registered EI-HHI. This is a 2.1 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the national carrier ITA Airways.
It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery in September 2022.
