American Airlines has faced multiple accusations of racial discrimination, with a recent case involving a newlywed interracial couple highlighting the ongoing issue.
In September 2022, Anthony Williams, a black retired police officer, and his wife, Katsiaryna Shasholka, a white Russian national were flying from Phoenix to Miami on their honeymoon. During the flight, another passenger suspected it to be a sex trafficking incident, and altered airline personnel.
Racial Discrimination Claim
The accuser, a white woman, claimed to have witnessed suspicious behavior between the couple. The passenger alleged that they were engaged in illicit activities.
Following the allegation, flight crew did not question the couple, instead contacting the police. Authorities met the flight on arrival, and detained the newly married couple for questioning.
Williams and Shasholka subsequently filed a lawsuit against American Airlines, alleging racial discrimination and negligence.
According to a report by The Bellingham Herald, Jasmine Rand, a lawyer representing Williams and Shasholka, gave comment on the matter. She said in a statement that “American Airlines’ pattern of racial discrimination of its passengers is intolerable.” Rand contended that the couple’s experience was another example of racial profiling by the carrier.
The legal team argued that the airline’s employees failed to properly investigate the accusation. The airline instead allegedly relying on racial stereotypes to escalate the situation.
They also pointed to a lack of adequate training for flight crews in handling such sensitive matters. This was particularly so incidents involving potential racial bias.

Allegations of Systemic Racial Bias
In 2017, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) issued an advisory to black travelers about flying American. The travel warning came in the wake of four reports of racial discrimination.
In 2023, three black men were ordered to deboard a flight from Phoenix to New York after a flight attendant complained about an unidentified passenger’s body odor.
The men denied being responsible for the odor and accused the airline of racial profiling. They had not been seated together on the flight and had not known one another. The three men later filed a lawsuit and American Airlines settled with them.

Critics argue that American Airlines has a systemic problem with racial bias among its employees, leading to discriminatory treatment of black passengers. The airline has denied any intentional discrimination in the recent case, but has acknowledged that it needs to do more to address racial bias among its employees.
American has implemented sensitivity training programs and revised their policies regarding passenger complaints.
The lawsuit filed by Williams and Shasholka has nevertheless reignited the debate about racial profiling and discrimination in the airline industry.
It serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by black travelers and the need for greater accountability from airlines to ensure a safe and inclusive travel experience for all passengers.
