IndiGo, India’s leading airline and one of the largest globally, commemorated its 18th anniversary earlier this month.

The celebration, held at the iconic Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, brought together figures from the travel industry, key partners, investors, and IndiGo’s leadership team.

The major low-cost airline which now supports over 100 million annual passengers, unveiled several initiatives targeting the passenger experience.

A Journey of Growth and Innovation

Since its inception in 2006, IndiGo has revolutionized air travel in India, making it more accessible and affordable for millions. The airline’s remarkable journey has been characterized by rapid expansion, operational excellence, and a commitment to customer satisfaction.

Today, IndiGo connects 88 destinations across India through more than 400 domestic routes. It provides access to air travel for first-time flyers and links major cities, mid-sized towns, and smaller communities alike.

Strategies for Global Growth

Emerging from the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, IndiGo has embraced an ambitious strategy. This is encapsulated by the motto “Towards new heights and across new frontiers.”

This vision has already translated into concrete actions that position the airline for significant growth in the coming years:

  • A record-breaking order for 500 aircraft, the largest single purchase in commercial aviation history.
  • The planned introduction of long-range XLR aircraft in 2025, enhancing the airline’s ability to serve distant markets.
  • A landmark order for A350-900 widebody aircraft, set to join the fleet from 2027. This enables IndiGo to compete on long-haul international routes.

These strategic moves are designed to double IndiGo’s scale and reach by the end of the decade, solidifying its position as a major player in global aviation.

On its 18th anniversary, IndiGo unveiled several initiatives aimed at elevating the travel experience and expanding its footprint:

  • The addition of Jaffna as its 34th international destination, with plans to surpass 40 international destinations in the near future.
