PSA CRJ-900 Suffers Wingtip Strike on Landing at Charlotte

A PSA Airlines CRJ-900 regional jet operating a scheduled service from Harrisburg, PA suffered a wingtip strike on landing at Charlotte, NC on 5 July 2024.

PSA Airlines flight AA5144, a Bombardier CRJ-900 operating the domestic service on behalf of American Airlines, had arrived at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) from Harrisburg.

Having conducted an approach to RWY 18L, flight crew initiated a missed approach. During the go around procedure the aircraft’s left wing impacted the runway.

A subsequent FAA report confirmed the go around and left wingtip strike, stating the aircraft was then re-sequenced for its second approach.

The flight conducted a further approach to RWY18L and landed from the second approach attempt without further incident.

The Terminal Area Forecast (TAF) valid at the time of the flights approach to Charlotte Douglas International Airport indicated visibility was good, with the possibility of gusty winds.

The TAF further indicates warm temperatures with some potential for convective activity due to the presence of towering cumulus clouds.

Flight Details

Flight data shows that flight AA5144 had made an on-time departure out of Harrisburg International Airport at 1209 local time.

The flight had then proceeded normally to Charlotte, North Carolina. The aircraft climbed to flight level FL320 (32,000 feet) for the regional service.

Descent and approach procedures were all conducted normally, with flight crew conducting the go around during the landing phase.

The extent of the damage to the aircraft has not been confirmed. It is understood the aircraft was returned to service approximately three days later.

The aircraft conducting the AA5144 rotation from Harrisburg on behalf of American Airlines was a Bombardier CRJ-900, registered N591NN. This is an 8.5 year old regional jet operated by the carrier PSA Airlines.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery in March 2016.
