Ibiza Airport Shut Down Amid Ryanair Bomb Threat

A security situation unfolded yesterday afternoon at Ibiza Airport when a passenger on a Ryanair flight made a bomb threat.

After investigation, the threat turned out to be a hoax, but it caused significant disruption to air travel for nearly an hour.

The incident occurred on Thursday 20 June 2024, as Ryanair flight FR8335 bound for Milan Bergamo Airport was preparing for departure.

According to reports, a male passenger on the Ryanair flight allegedly claimed he was carrying a bomb.

This triggered immediate security protocols, leading to the evacuation of the aircraft and the suspension of all flight operations at Ibiza Airport.

The Spanish airport authority, Aena, confirmed the security incident and stated that the Civil Guard took charge of the situation.

Law enforcement officials swiftly apprehended the passenger who appeared to be in an intoxicated state.  

A thorough inspection of the aircraft was then conducted and no explosives were found.

Airport Closure after Bomb Threat

The airport closure caused delays and disruptions for travelers. Flights were grounded for nearly an hour, with some diverted to other airports in the region, including Palma de Mallorca.

Normal operations resumed approximately 45 minutes later at around 17:00 local time, after authorities deemed the situation safe.

The motive behind the passenger’s actions remains unclear. Making a bomb threat is a serious offense, and the individual is likely to face legal consequences.

This incident highlights the importance of airport security measures and the swift response from authorities in ensuring passenger safety.
