All Nippon Airways 787-8 Returns to Tokyo with Cockpit Display Problem

An All Nippon Airways Boeing 787-8 operating from Tokyo Haneda to Taipei, Taiwan made a return to Tokyo need after experiencing problems with the cockpit LCD displays on 25 June 2024.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight NH853, a Boeing 787-8 bound for Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA), was en route to Taipei in the cruise when the problem occurred.

Flight crew reported that a number of flight deck displays were malfunctioning. As a result, the crew elected to initiate a return to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND).

A direct course was set for the return to the origin airport, where the flight landed without further incident approximately 2 ½ hours after making the diversion.

According to the online source the Aviation Herald, the Japanese Ministry of transport confirmed that the aircraft returned after a number of LCD displays malfunctioned. The exact number and type of the cockpit displays was not clarified.

A replacement aircraft was mustered to conduct the onwards service to Taipei as a result.

Flight Details

Flight data shows that the flight NH853 made a departure from Tokyo Haneda at 13:35 local time on 25 June.

The flight then set course normally, climbing to flight level FL400 (40,000 feet) for the south westerly route to Taiwan.

The decision to return to the origin airport was then made whilst the aircraft was in cruising flight, approximately 300 nautical miles from Taipei.

The flight subsequently landed just under 2 ½ hours after the diversion was made. The flight returned under normal operating procedures.

The aircraft conducting the NH853 rotation to Taipei Songshan Airport was a Boeing 787-9, registered JA808A.

This is a 12.2-year-old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA).

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery in April 2012.

All Nippon Airways (ANA), is Japan’s largest airline. It is a 5-Star airline that has been awarded this recognition by Skytrax.

The airline operates both domestic and international flights, with hubs at Tokyo-Haneda Airport and Tokyo-Narita Airport.
