Icelandair Welcomes First A321LR

Iceland air has today taken delivery of its first Airbus A321LR, marking the first step in the airlines fleet renewal, making it a new Airbus operator. The aircraft is the first of four to be leased from SMBC Aviation Capital Limited. It is the first of the next generation planes that the airline will be receiving. With the carrier due to take delivery of 13 A321XLRs.

The A321LR is ideally suited to transatlantic routes and will be utilized by the airline to expand its route network. Previously this year, the airline announced services to Nashville starting May 2025. With a steadily growing route network, the addition brings the carrier’s portfolio to 18 destinations in North America.

With the arrival of the Airbus A321LR today marks a new era for Iceland air, as for the first time since the airline launched it has now officially become an Airbus customer and with Air Greenland being advocates for the A330neo, there is always a possibility as we see the airline grow, that such planes will also be considered.

A321LR Allows New Routes and Growth

With the introduction of the A321LR and XLR coming to the Iceland Air fleet. The introduction of the new aircraft will allow the airline to expand its market reach into previously inaccessible markets, with the new planes allowing for better fuel economy and greater range at a lower cost. Allowing the airline for the first time to start to look at flights over the U.S West Coast, and even opening the door to South American markets.

Iceland Air has already seen a steady increase in traffic in 2024 with two million passengers carried in H1 2024 amid a travel shift, which has seen more people use the carrier for transatlantic services. This was a seven percent increase from 2023 and marked a sign for a new era for the Icelandic carrier, as it looks towards the future.

Icelandair: A Brief Overview

Icelandair, founded in 1937, has long been a vital link between Europe and North America, leveraging Iceland’s strategic geographic location.

The airline operates a fleet of narrow-body aircraft, primarily Boeing 737 MAX, 757 and now A321LR aircraft, which are well-suited for its unique route network.

Known for its stopover program, which allows passengers to break their journey in Iceland at no additional airfare cost, Icelandair has played a crucial role in boosting Iceland’s tourism industry.
