Iberia Flight Madrid to Palma De Mallorca Declares Emergency

Iberia flight IB1679, an A320-200 inbound from Madrid, declared an emergency on descent into Palma De Mallorca earlier this evening.

An Iberia flight inbound to Palma De Mallorca from Madrid declared an emergency on descent into the destination earlier this evening.

Iberia Express flight IB1679, operated by an Airbus A320-200, squawked emergency transponder code 7700 during its approach into Palma De Mallorca Airport (PMS).

The Iberia flight IB1679 was established in the descent for the destination Palma De Mallorca (PMI) when flight crew declared the emergency. The aircraft was passing through 10,000 feet in the latter stages of the approach when the emergency was declared. The nature of the emergency is not yet know.

Flight crew squawked transponder code 7700 at 22:55 UTC before continuing with the descent and approach to the destination.

23:02 UTC: Landed Palma De Mallorca (PMI)


After declaring the emergency, flight IB1679 expedited the descent, before making an approach to runway 06 Palma De Mallorca (PMI). The flight subsequently landed at 23:02 UTC after completing a priority landing.

Flight data shows that flight IB1679 made an on-time departure from Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) at 23:00 local time this evening. Following departure, the flight had set course normally, climbing to flight level FL320 for the westerly service to Mallorca.

Top of descent was similarly conducted normally, and the flight was approaching the island on flight plan track when the emergency was declared.

The aircraft conducting the IB1679 rotation from Madrid was an Airbus A320-200, registered EC-LYE. This is an 11.6 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Iberia Express. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in August 2013.
