The Three-runway System (3RS) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is now set begin operations on November 28, 2024.
Once the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) receives its aerodrome license, all three runways will be fully operational under the new system. This marks a historic milestone in Hong Kong’s aviation history.
The Three-Runway System Project
This massive expansion project rivals building an entirely new airport, with its scope and complexity transforming HKIA‘s capabilities.
The project’s first major component involves an ambitious land reclamation effort. It will create 650 hectares of new land north of the existing airport – an area equivalent to 34 Victoria Parks.
This extensive reclamation utilizes innovative non-dredge methods, including deep cement mixing, to ensure minimal environmental impact.
At the heart of the expansion is the construction of the new T2 Concourse and its accompanying apron, designed to handle increased passenger traffic and aircraft movements.
Alongside this, the development of a new 3,800-meter runway with comprehensive taxiway systems represents a significant engineering achievement.
The existing North Runway has also undergone extensive reconfiguration to integrate seamlessly with the new system.
HKIA Terminal 2 Upgrade
Terminal 2 is undergoing a complete transformation to provide comprehensive passenger services. The renovated terminal will feature state-of-the-art arrivals and departures facilities, enhancing the travel experience for millions of passengers annually.
To connect these new facilities, the project includes a cutting-edge Automated People Mover (APM) system spanning 2,600 meters between Terminal 2 and the T2 Concourse.
This high-speed transportation solution will operate at an impressive 80km/h, capable of moving 10,800 passengers every hour.
Behind the scenes, a sophisticated new Baggage Handling System (BHS) will connect Terminal 2 with the T2 Concourse, processing an impressive 9,600 bags per hour.
This advanced system ensures efficient and reliable baggage transport throughout the expanded airport complex.
Supporting these primary developments is an extensive network of essential infrastructure, including new roads and transportation facilities. This has been designed to handle increased passenger and cargo volumes.
North Runway Commissioning
The project has achieved significant milestones since the new North Runway’s commissioning in November 2022. During this period, HKIA maintained efficient two-runway operations while temporarily closing the Centre Runway for major upgrades.
These improvements included crucial runway relevelling to align with connecting taxiways, construction of new runway entry and exit points, and the addition of wrap-around taxiways at both ends of the runway.
Centre Runway Testing
Following successful flight testing of the Centre Runway in September, AAHK demonstrated its commitment to safety and operational readiness.
The airport conducted a comprehensive aircraft crash and rescue exercise on October 15, 2024. This critical drill was just one part of the extensive preparatory work leading up to the 3RS commissioning.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, AAHK has outlined plans to launch the expanded Terminal 2 in phases beginning in late 2025. Current efforts focus on crucial preparatory work, including the coordination with various business partners for passenger services and the strategic leasing of retail and service outlets.
This phased approach ensures a smooth transition and allows for careful implementation of all operational aspects.
The Three-runway System represents a new chapter in Hong Kong’s aviation history, positioning HKIA to handle increasing air traffic demands while maintaining its status as a leading global aviation hub.
This transformative project not only enhances the airport’s operational capabilities but further reinforces Hong Kong’s position as a key international transport and logistics center.
