Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), managed by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), continues to demonstrate a strong recovery and growth trajectory in 2025.
The latest air traffic statistics for February, released today, highlight a bustling travel period, particularly around the Chinese New Year.
The figures continue to signal the Hong Kong airport’s return to pre-pandemic vibrancy.
February Highlights: A Record-Breaking Peak
February proved to be a standout month for HKIA, with passenger traffic reaching a new post-pandemic daily high on February 2.
Coinciding with the Chinese New Year festivities, the airport welcomed approximately 195,000 passengers in a single day. This is a clear sign that travel demand has rebounded to levels last seen before the global health crisis.
For the entire month, HKIA served 4.5 million passengers, reflecting a solid 7.0% increase compared to February 2024. Alongside this, flight movements rose by 5.2% year-on-year, totaling 29,075 takeoffs and landings.
The Chinese New Year surge underscores HKIA’s critical role as a regional travel hub, connecting families and travelers during one of Asia’s most significant holidays.
This peak performance signals not only a recovery but also growing confidence in air travel through Hong Kong.

Early Performance: A Promising Start to 2025
Looking at the broader picture, the first two months of 2025 paint an even more encouraging story. HKIA handled 9.8 million passengers from January to February. This was a remarkable 17.3% jump from the same period in 2024.
Flight movements during this time climbed by 11.2% to 62,735, reflecting heightened airline activity. Notably, transfer and transit passengers surged by 36%. Meanwhile, visitor numbers grew by a healthy 15%. The strongest demand came from Southeast Asia and Japan, key markets driving HKIA’s passenger growth.
This uptick aligns with Hong Kong’s efforts to bolster its appeal as a global tourism and business destination. HKIA’s strategic location and world-class facilities continue to attract travelers, cementing its status as a vital gateway to Asia.

Cargo Operations: Steady Gains
Cargo traffic at HKIA also showed resilience in early 2025. Over the first two months, the airport processed 718,000 tonnes of cargo, a 2.2% increase year-on-year.
Transshipments led the charge with a 9.6% rise, highlighting HKIA’s role in facilitating regional trade networks. February alone saw 324,000 tonnes of cargo handled, matching last year’s performance.
Europe and the Middle East emerged as the top-performing regions for cargo traffic, fueled by steady demand in these markets.
HKIA’s cargo operations benefit from its advanced logistics infrastructure and connectivity to over 220 destinations worldwide.
This growth reinforces Hong Kong’s position as a linchpin in global supply chains.

A Strong 12-Month Snapshot
On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA’s performance is equally impressive. Passenger volume soared by 25.0% to 54.5 million, while flight movements jumped 23.2% to 369,635.
Cargo throughput achieved double-digit growth of 11.2%, reaching 4.95 million tonnes. These figures reflect HKIA’s sustained momentum and its ability to adapt to evolving travel and trade dynamics.
Network Expansion: New Routes
Adding to its robust performance, HKIA welcomed a new route from Tibet Airlines in February. The service connects Hong Kong to Lhasa via Chengdu, further expanding the airport’s already extensive network.
With over 120 airlines operating at HKIA, this addition enhances accessibility to the Tibetan region, appealing to both leisure and business travelers.
Looking Ahead
HKIA’s strong start to 2025 signals a bright future. As passenger and cargo traffic continue to rise, the airport remains a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s economic vitality and global connectivity.
With ongoing investments in infrastructure and services, HKIA is well-positioned to meet growing demand and maintain its reputation as one of the world’s premier aviation hubs.
