Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reported a significant surge in passenger and cargo traffic in April 2024, highlighting the ongoing recovery of the travel industry in the region.
The figures, released by Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), point towards a positive outlook for HKIA, a major aviation hub in Asia.
Passenger Traffic Uplift
Passenger numbers at HKIA jumped an impressive 35.9% year-on-year in April, reaching 4.23 million. This growth can be partly attributed to the extended Easter holiday weekend that fell at the end of March.
The holiday period fueled increased travel across all passenger segments, with destinations in Southeast Asia, Mainland China, and Japan experiencing the most significant rises.
This trend reflects a growing desire for regional travel as pandemic restrictions ease.
Cargo Holds Steady Growth Trajectory
Cargo throughput at HKIA maintained its positive trajectory in April, rising 13.9% year-on-year to 394,000 tonnes.
This marks HKIA’s twelfth consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year cargo volume growth. Exports continued to be a major driver of this increase, with a 24.7% rise compared to April 2023.
Key trading regions like North America, Europe, and Taiwan witnessed the most substantial cargo traffic growth during the month.
This sustained cargo growth signifies HKIA’s continued importance as a global logistics hub.
2024: A Year of Strong Performance
The positive trend extends beyond April. The first four months of 2024 paint an even brighter picture for HKIA.
Passenger traffic reached 16.9 million, representing a remarkable 67.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
This significant rise reflects a recovering travel demand post-pandemic. Flight movements also climbed 55.3% year-on-year to 115,285, demonstrating increased airline activity at HKIA.
Furthermore, cargo volume grew by a healthy 17.7% to over 1.5 million tonnes. This further solidified HKIA’s position as a leading cargo gateway.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume soared by a staggering 200.9% to 46.3 million. Flight movements and cargo throughput also saw impressive year-on-year increases. Increases were 83.9% and 11.0%, reaching 317,150 and 4.6 million tonnes, respectively.
New Laos Connection Takes Flight
April also saw an exciting development for HKIA’s network connectivity. Hong Kong Airlines launched a new direct flight service between HKIA and Vientiane Wattay International Airport in Laos.
This twice-weekly service marks the first direct connection between Hong Kong and Laos since the pandemic.
The new route strengthens HKIA’s position as a vital link within Southeast Asia, catering to both business and leisure travelers.
Connectivity in Southeast Asia
Vivian Cheung, Chief Operating Officer of AAHK, expressed her satisfaction with the new route. “We are delighted that one of our home-based carriers has launched this new direct service,” she said.
“Strategically positioned in the heart of Southeast Asia, Laos plays a vital role in the Belt and Road Initiative. This expanded network connection is expected to benefit both business travelers and tourists seeking to explore this growing region.”
