A Hong Kong Airlines flight operating from Hangzhou to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) diverted to Fuzhou after reporting a cabin fire on 20 March.
The in-flight emergency, involving a fire in an overhead locker, resulted in an unscheduled diversion to Fuzhou Changle International Airport (FOC).
Hong Kong Airlines HX115 Hangzhou-Hong Kong

Flight HX115 was operated by an Airbus A320-200 registered B-LPC. The flight had departed from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) at 12:20pm local time.
Following an uneventful takeoff, the flight reported a suspected fire in an overhead baggage compartment. The incident took place approximately 15 minutes into the flight.
Flight crew subsequently executed a safe emergency landing in Fuzhou at 2:01 PM, with no injuries reported. The flight was carrying 160 passengers and 8 crew members,
The incident originated when smoke and flames were detected emanating from the overhead storage area. Crew members, assisted by passengers, promptly intervened, using available water and juice to suppress the fire before it could escalate.
Video evidence circulating online depicted smoke within the cabin and the concerted efforts to extinguish the flames. Some passengers described the event as “highly disruptive.”
By the time of landing, the passenger cabin situation was stabilized. Fuzhou ground emergency response teams, including fire services, were on standby but not required to intervene.
Possible Power Bank Fire
Preliminary assessments indicate that a portable electronic device, potentially a power bank, may have initiated the Hong Kong Airlines in-flight fire. Notably, the precise cause still remains under investigation by relevant authorities.
This occurrence highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding lithium-ion batteries in aviation. This is a matter that has prompted enhanced regulatory oversight. Several airlines have moved to ban power banks onboard after a serious incident resulted in the destruction of an Air Busan A321 in January.
Hong Kong Airlines issued a statement commending the crew’s effective handling of the situation. It affirmed the commitment to supporting affected passengers with alternative travel arrangements while fully cooperating with the investigation.

The diversion of flight HX115 exemplifies the importance of decisive action in managing in-flight emergencies. The Airbus A320 sustained no apparent structural compromise, facilitating a secure landing.
As the inquiry progresses, aviation authorities are expected to further evaluate existing protocols for onboard battery-powered devices to mitigate future risks. The successful resolution of this incident ensured the safety of all onboard, averting a potentially severe outcome.
