Atlantic Canadians will see the addition of a new Mediterranean service this summer. WestJet has just announced a new seasonal route, connecting Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) to Barcelona, Spain.
The service will operate nonstop to Barcelona’s Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN).
Starting 27 June 2025, travellers will have an option of four weekly flights, opening a direct pathway to one of Europe’s most captivating cities.

WestJet Transatlantic Focus
This strategic addition to WestJet’s summer 2025 schedule underscores the airline’s commitment to expanding its transatlantic offerings, particularly for East Coast residents.
John Weatherill, WestJet’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the route’s potential. “This route is poised to become a favourite among those eager to explore Spain and beyond.”
He further emphasized how the Halifax-Barcelona service complements WestJet’s already extensive transatlantic schedule from Atlantic Canada, catering to the persistent strong demand for European travel.

The significance of this new connection resonates deeply with the Halifax International Airport Authority. Marie Manning, Vice President, Business Development & Chief Commercial Officer, expressed her support for the venture.
“We are thrilled that WestJet will be launching the first-ever non-stop service connecting Halifax Stanfield to Spain.” She noted Barcelona’s rich culture and architectural marvels, emphasizing how the route will facilitate travel to a popular European destination.
She said that it also invite Spanish and international visitors to experience the beauty of Atlantic Canada.
Growing Presence at Halifax Stanfield
This announcement solidifies WestJet’s growing presence at Halifax Stanfield. In 2025, the airline will offer its most comprehensive transatlantic schedule yet, featuring new routes to Amsterdam, Paris, and now Barcelona.
These will operate alongside the return of beloved services to London, Dublin, and Edinburgh. This expansion provides travellers with unprecedented choice and flexibility when planning their European getaways.
WestJet’s journey began in 1996 with a modest team of just over 200 employees and three aircraft, serving five destinations. Since then, the airline has revolutionized Canadian air travel by pioneering low-cost fares, effectively doubling the nation’s flying population.
The recent integration with Sunwing in 2025 has further strengthened WestJet’s position, with over 14,000 employees supporting nearly 200 aircraft, connecting passengers to over 100 destinations across North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia.
Conclusion
For Atlantic Canadians, the new Halifax-Barcelona route is an opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and rich history of one of Europe’s most beloved cities.
Whether exploring the iconic Sagrada Familia, strolling along Las Ramblas, or enjoying the Mediterranean coastline, travellers can look forward to an unforgettable summer adventure.
