HK Express Airways is set to enter the Malaysian market, with the launch of a new direct service between Hong Kong and Penang.

HK Express Airways is set for the launch of a new direct service between Hong Kong and Penang International Airport (PEN) in Malaysia.

Starting from 21 November 2024, this new route will connect two of Asia’s most vibrant destinations. The direct route will be served in just a 3-hour flight. It offers travelers an exciting blend of diverse cultures, rich heritage, and culinary delights.

People often call Penang, the Malaysian island state, the “Pearl of the Orient.” Travelers and locals alike recognize it for its unique fusion of Malay and old Hong Kong influences.

This new route aims to cater to the growing interest in cultural tourism. It will provide an additional option for those seeking to explore the multifaceted charm of Southeast Asia.

Entry to the Malaysian Market


HK Express CEO Jeanette Mao expressed enthusiasm about the new route. “We are thrilled to announce our entry into the Malaysian market with this direct flight to Penang.”

“This launch not only marks a significant milestone for HK Express but also aligns with our strategic vision of strengthening Hong Kong’s connections across Asia.”

Penang’s tourism authorities have warmly received the airline’s announcement. Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, highlighted the strong cultural ties between Hong Kong and Penang.

“Our residents are proficient in multiple languages, including Malay, English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and various Chinese dialects such as Hokkien, Teochew, and Hakka.”

“This linguistic diversity fosters a deep connection between Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and Penang,” Wong explained.

Wong also emphasized Penang’s unique attractions. These include George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Penang Hill.

He invited visitors to experience the city’s seamless blend of East and West, tradition and modernity. It promises enriching experiences for those who appreciate cultural heritage, natural environment, and Nanyang cuisine.

To celebrate the launch of this new route, HK Express is offering an enticing promotion. Travelers can book “Ultra Lite” fares for as low as HK$18, which includes one small personal item. This offer applies to trips booked between 21 November 2024 and 30 March 2025.

The booking window opens at 11:30 AM on 14 August and closes at 11:59 PM on 18 August 2024. Interested travelers can take advantage of this special rate by making flight bookings on the HK Express website or mobile app.
