London City Airport (LCY) witnessed a historic moment as Helvetic Airways landed what is the largest aircraft to operate into the docklands airport.

Helvetic, on behalf of Swiss International Air Lines, successfully landed the inaugural commercial flight of the Embraer E195-E2 on Wednesday 26 March.

This landmark event marks the arrival of the largest jet to ever grace the airport’s runway, ushering in a new chapter of connectivity and efficiency.

Another LCY Record for Helvetic

Helvetic Airways has once again etched its name in London City Airport’s history books. It is just three and a half years since it landed the Embraer E190-E2 at LCY.

The airline has now introduced the E195-E2, a significant leap in capacity and sustainability. With a length of 41.5 meters and a seating capacity of 134, this aircraft sets a new standard for size at the airport.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the E195-E2’s exceptional fuel efficiency. It boasts the lowest fuel consumption per seat of any aircraft currently operating at London City Airport. This not only translates to reduced operational costs but also contributes to a smaller environmental footprint.

LCY Steep Approach

The unique challenges posed by London City Airport’s steep approach require specialized aircraft and trained cockpit crews. Helvetic Airways has consistently demonstrated its capability in meeting these requirements.

“We are proud to be the first airline to bring the larger E195-E2 to London City Airport, following our premiere with the Embraer E190-E2 in 2021,” stated Tobias Pogorevc, CEO of Helvetic Airways, during the celebratory event.

“This achievement solidifies our position as the only airline globally to operate three distinct Embraer aircraft types at London City, granting our wet-lease customers unparalleled flexibility.”

Touchdown of Maiden Flight

The maiden flight, originating from Zurich at 11:30 a.m., touched down at London City Airport shortly after midday, marking a significant milestone for both the airline and the airport.

Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, gave comment on the historic arrival. “We’re delighted to welcome the first commercial flight of the E195-E2 aircraft to London City.”

“This underscores our commitment to collaborating with airlines and manufacturers to introduce cleaner, quieter, new-generation aircraft to our airport.”

“The E195-E2 unlocks a range of exciting new destinations for our passengers, allowing us to grow and meet our passenger cap while maintaining our commitment to reduced noise and emissions.”

Embraer, the aircraft manufacturer, also celebrated this achievement. “London City, where 75% of flights are on Embraer aircraft, holds a special place for us,” remarked Marie-Louise Philippe, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing, Head of Region Europe and Central Asia, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “Celebrating another milestone in the E2 story with our partners from Helvetic Airways and London City is truly exciting.”

E195-E2: Looking Ahead

The E195-E2’s environmental credentials are a key highlight. It offers 30% lower CO2 emissions per seat and a 63% smaller noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft, making it the most sustainable and efficient aircraft certified for operation at London City.

Looking ahead, Embraer is developing the E2TS (Embraer Enhanced Takeoff System), an automatic takeoff system that will further enhance the E195-E2’s capabilities.

Once certified, the E2TS will extend the aircraft’s range from London City from 3200 km to 4000 km. This extended range will open up new and exciting destinations for London City passengers. This includes Istanbul, Gran Canaria, Casablanca, Athens, and Cairo, bringing these locations within reach for the first time.

The arrival of the Embraer E195-E2 represents a significant step forward for London City Airport, promising enhanced connectivity, greater efficiency, and a more sustainable future.
