Hawaiian Airlines Flight Returns to Seattle After Reporting Fumes in the Cockpit

A Hawaiian Airlines A330-200 departing for Hawaii made a return to Seattle Tacoma after flight crew reported fumes in the cockpit on 30 December.

A Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330-200 departing for Honolulu, Hawaii made a precautionary return to Seattle after flight crew reported the presence of fumes in the cockpit on 30 December 2024.

Hawaiian airlines flight HA21, operated by an Airbus A330-200, had conducted a departure from Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service bound for Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).

Shortly after the flight’s departure, flight crew reported the presence of fumes in the cockpit. As a result, the departure was terminated and flight crew elected to make a precautionary return to the origin airport.

The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident at Seattle Tacoma International Airport. Flight crew made the return landing just under 30 minutes after the flight’s initial departure. Fire services and medical personnel met the aircraft on arrival as a precaution.

The in-flight incident will now become the subject of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigation.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that the flight HA21 had made a delayed departure out of Seattle at 1241 local time on 30 December. The service’s departure time was listed as 0815 local time.

Following departure, the flight had climbed to 7000 feet before flight crew terminated the departure procedure and initiated a direct return to Seattle Tacoma.

The aircraft conducting the HA21 service to Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport was an Airbus A330-200, registered N393HA. This is 11.6 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Hawaiian Airlines.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in June 2013.
