Aviation analytics leader Cirium has revealed data showing that 2024 marked an extraordinary milestone in global air travel. Worldwide, airlines offered a historic record number of passenger seats across their networks.
Throughout 2024, airlines worldwide provided a remarkable 5.85 billion seats on scheduled flights, exceeding the previous record of 5.72 billion seats from 2019 by 2%.
This significant achievement was accompanied by a 6% year-over-year growth in global seat capacity compared to 2023. The increase was driven by surging travel demand and airlines’ strategic deployment of larger aircraft across their fleets.
Notable Trend in 2024 Data
A notable trend emerged in the data. While seat numbers reached historic highs, the total number of scheduled flights in 2024 amounted to 36.4 million. This remained 5% below the 2019 levels.
This disparity highlights a fundamental shift in airline operations. Carriers are increasingly opting to operate larger aircraft with higher seating capacities rather than increasing flight frequencies.
Recovery and Growth in 2024
“The 2024 numbers tell an impressive story of recovery and growth,” says Cirium CEO Jeremy Bowen.
“Reaching 5.85 billion available seats globally demonstrates the fundamental role of air travel in today’s interconnected world – whether for reuniting families, enabling crucial business meetings, or helping people discover new destinations.”
“The industry’s ability to exceed pre-pandemic levels in such a short time underscores the resilience and adaptability of global aviation.”

UK Air Travel in 2024
In 2024, over 1.98 million flights took off from or landed at UK airports. This included more than 991,000 arrivals and 991,000 departures.
During this period, over 357.6 million seats were available on flights to and from UK airports. This breaks down to roughly 178.8 million arrival seats and 178.8 million departure seats.
Flight Activity and Capacity
Compared to 2023, the number of flights departing from UK airports increased by 4.3%. Departing seat capacity saw a slightly higher increase of 5.9% year-over-year.
While still recovering from the pandemic, flight departures in 2024 reached 91.2% of pre-pandemic (2019) levels. Departing seat capacity came close, reaching 99.8% of 2019 levels.
Market Dynamics in 2024

US Carriers Dominate
In terms of individual carriers, American Airlines maintained its position as the global leader in passenger seat offerings.
The top ranks were dominated by U.S. carriers, with Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines following closely behind.

Ryanair in Top Five
European low-cost carrier Ryanair stood out as the only non-U.S. operator to secure a position in the top five, highlighting the continued strength of the American aviation market.
Airports in 2024
The airport landscape saw Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport retain its crown as the world’s busiest hub, offering an impressive 62.7 million departing seats.
Dubai International Airport secured second place with 59.7 million seats, while Tokyo-Haneda, London Heathrow, and Dallas-Fort Worth completed the top five with 55, 52.4, and 51.4 million departing seats respectively.

Regional Trends and Route Analysis
Asia’s aviation market showed particular strength in 2024, dominating the list of busiest routes globally.
Eight of the top ten busiest routes were located within the region, with the Seoul-Gimpo to Jeju route leading the pack at over 15 million annual seats.
The remaining spots in the top ten were claimed by routes in the Middle East and Australia, highlighting the diverse nature of global air travel patterns.

Operational Efficiency and Fleet Modernization
Airlines achieved significant improvements in operational efficiency during 2024, with average flight capacity increasing to 161 seats per flight. This is a notable rise from 150 seats in 2019 and 140 seats a decade ago.
This efficiency gain was achieved through strategic fleet modernization. Airlines were replacing smaller aircraft like the A319 with larger, more fuel-efficient models such as the A320neo and A321neo. This was particularly evident at slot-constrained airports.
Additionally, carriers optimized their existing aircraft configurations to maximize seating capacity while maintaining passenger comfort standards.
This approach helped airlines better manage operating costs while meeting growing travel demand.
