German Airways, the second-longest operating airline in Germany, is embarking on a new chapter with a comprehensive rebranding of its fleet of eight Embraer E190 aircraft.

The airline has entrusted Technik with this undertaking. The first aircraft to emerge from the maintenance hangar at Cologne/Bonn Airport showcased a fresh, dynamic design. It powerfully reinforces the airline’s established brand identity.

New Fleet Livery

This initial aircraft, bearing the registration D-AJHW, is currently undergoing final maintenance procedures and is expected to rejoin scheduled service imminently.

The most striking element of the new livery is undoubtedly the redesigned tail fin. With a display of the company name, the tail now proudly features a dynamically dotted representation of the German national flag.

The black, red, and gold scheme creates a distinct visual separation from the aircraft fuselage. This bold design choice allows the iconic colors to speak for themselves, instantly communicating the airline’s national heritage.

Furthermore, the winglets also incorporate the German color palette, ensuring a cohesive and impactful visual statement.

With this revitalized aesthetic, German Airways aims to underscore its commitment to innovation as a German carrier, projecting a clear message of reliability and technical excellence.

Incorporation of National Colours

The incorporation of the national flag’s colours was already a significant aspect of the previous livery, demonstrating the airline’s long-standing connection to its German roots.

The decision to now let the colours take centre stage on the tail fin signifies a confident evolution of this visual identity.

Maren Wolters, Managing Director of German Airways, expressed her enthusiasm for the rebranding. “After almost five years of operation, the German Airways brand has become firmly established within the European aviation market.”

“We are thrilled to unveil this new look almost concurrently with the commencement of the current summer flight schedule. As a service provider known for embodying typically German quality characteristics such as dependability and superior technical performance, we believe it is the right time to take this next visual step.”

German Airways Operations

German Airways holds the second-oldest operating license in the Federal Republic of Germany. It operates in both the charter sector, including services for sports teams, and, more significantly, in the wet lease market.

Wet leasing involves providing aircraft and flight crews to major European airlines. Currently, a significant portion of the German Airways fleet is operating on behalf of KLM Cityhopper.

As testament to this strong partnership, the newly rebranded aircraft will now also feature the inscription “Operating for KLM Cityhopper.”

Maren Wolters further commented on this collaboration. “We are immensely proud to be able to integrate the logo of our strategic partner into this new design. It is a truly important symbol of the appreciation for our performance and the strength of our collaboration.”

Conclusion

The successful redesign of this first aircraft marks the beginning of the transformation for the entire German Airways fleet.

This strategic move not only focuses on achieving a contemporary and appealing visual presence but also prioritizes the immediate recognition of the airline’s German identity.

By embracing a modern yet distinctly national color scheme, German Airways reinforces its national positioning.

The airline is a reliable and technically proficient European carrier with deep roots in Germany. This rebranding initiative signals a forward-thinking approach while honoring the airline’s heritage and commitment to quality.
