Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-800 Grounded After Fuel Leak Incident in Jakarta

A Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-800 aircraft experienced a fuel leak while taxiing for departure from Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on 24 August.

A Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-800 aircraft experienced a fuel leak while taxiing for takeoff at Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on August 24, 2024.

The incident, which was captured on video, forced the pilot to return the aircraft to the apron for a thorough inspection.

Garuda Indonesia flight GA174, a Boeing 737-800, was preparing for a departure to Pekanbaru-Sumatra Island (PKB). As the aircraft was taxiing at Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in preparation for takeoff, fuel was observed to be leaking from the right hand wing.

As a result, the flight crew made the decision to abort the departure and return the aircraft to the hardstanding for inspection.

All 135 passengers on board the flight were safely disembarked and rebooked on a replacement flight. No injuries were reported during the ground incident. The cause of the fuel leak is currently under investigation by Indonesian aviation authorities.

Garuda Indonesia, one of Indonesia’s largest airlines, issued a statement addressing the incident. The national carrier expressed its commitment to passenger safety and assured that the incident will be thoroughly investigated. The airline has also apologized to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.

Aircraft Details


The aircraft involved in the ground incident was a Boeing 737-800, registered PK-GFW. This is due in 11.2 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Garuda Indonesia. It has been operational service with the national airline since its initial delivery in July 2013.

The aircraft was subsequently grounded by the carrier following the fuel leak incident.
