Garuda Indonesia 747 Suffers Engine Failure on Takeoff Makassar

Garuda Indonesia flight GA1105, a Boeing 747-400 bound for Madinah, suffered a #4 engine failure on takeoff from Makassar Airport (UPG), Indonesia today.

A Garuda Indonesia Boeing 747 operating from Makassar Airport (UPG) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia suffered an engine failure during takeoff on 15 May 2024.

Garuda Indonesia flight GA1105, a Boeing 747-400 being operated under lease from Terra Avia, was departing Makassar for Madinah, Saudi Arabia when the incident occurred.

As the aircraft rotated for takeoff, its outboard right-hand engine (#4 engine) appeared to suffer a compressor stall. Video footage of the event shows the engine in meeting flames.

Flight crew continued with the takeoff, but terminated the climb shortly thereafter and initiated a return to Makassar.

The aircraft involved in the Garuda Indonesia engine failure incident was in the process of conducting a pilgrimage flight to Madinah, with a reported 450 persons on board.

Flight GA1105 subsequently landed safely without further incident.

The aircraft conducting the GA1105 service to Madinah was a Boeing 747-400, registered ER-BOS. This is a 22.6-year-old wide-body aircraft operated by Garuda Indonesia.

ER-BOS was under lease from Terra Avia who have operated the aircraft since September 2022.

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, also known as Makassar Airport, is an international airport serving Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

It is the main gateway for flights to Eastern Indonesia and is also a base for the Indonesian Air Force. The airport is named after Sultan Hasanuddin, a 17th-century ruler of the Gowa Sultanate.

The airport is located 20 kilometers northeast of Makassar’s city center. It is one of Indonesia’s busiest airports, handling over 13 million passengers in 2019.
