Finnair has announced a significant expansion of its international routes for the summer season 2025, strengthening its presence in both the United States and Asia.

The Finnish carrier will increase frequencies to several popular destinations, offering travelers enhanced connectivity across continents. The expansion comes at the same time that Icelandic carrier PLAY Airlines has indicated a strategic reduction of its North American flight services.

Increased US Connectivity

The airline is substantially boosting its American routes. Most notably, Chicago will see daily flights, while Dallas service will increase to 11 weekly frequencies. This is five more than in summer 2024. Furthermore, both Seattle and Los Angeles will receive two additional weekly flights.

Christine Rovelli, Finnair’s Chief Revenue Officer, explains the strategic importance of these additions. “By increasing our capacity to the United States, we’re providing excellent connectivity to North America and beyond. Passengers can seamlessly connect through Dallas and Chicago to our partner American Airlines’ extensive network in North and South America.”

Expanded Asian Presence

In addition to the US expansion, Finnair is strengthening its Asian network. The airline will offer:

  • Daily flights to Osaka, coinciding with World Expo 2025
  • Four weekly flights to Nagoya, adding one more frequency
  • Four weekly flights to Shanghai, increasing by one frequency

For travelers interested in exploring Japan, these routes offer convenient access to popular destinations. For instance, from Osaka’s Kansai Airport, the historic city of Kyoto is just a 1.5-hour train ride away.

Recent Performance and Growth

Recent statistics demonstrate Finnair’s successful growth trajectory. In September, the airline transported 1,015,600 passengers – a 10.2% increase compared to the previous year.

Overall capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), grew by 9.0% year-on-year, with Asian routes showing particularly strong growth at 13.1%.
