Yesterday evening, a Finnair Airbus A330 bound for New York as AY15, had to make an emergency return back to Helsinki.
Information has been released pertinent to the incident at hand, which we will get into in this article.
Without further ado, let’s get into it…
Emergency Return!: Finnair Flight AY15 – Helsinki to New York…
Finnair flight AY15, which made the emergency return, is a routine scheduled flight between Helsinki & New York.
Furthermore, it is understood the aircraft involved was OH-LTO.
As per data from Planespotters.net, OH-LTO is a 15.4 year old Airbus A330-300 that was delivered to the airline in May 2009.
It is an aircraft also painted with the special Marimekko Unikko special colours, which was painted in December 2014.
Moreover, of the Airbus A330-300 variant, Finnair has eight of them in their fleet.
As well as the A330-300, the airline also has the following other aircraft in their fleet:
– 12 ATR 72s.
– 5 Airbus A319s.
– 10 Airbus A320s.
– 15 Airbus A321s.
– 17 Airbus A350s.
– 12 Embraer E190s.
Finnair flight AY15, which made the emergency return, departed Helsinki at 1738 local time yesterday, bound for New York.
Not long into the climb, the crew stopped this process and began to return to it’s departure airfield once again.
The aircraft landed safely without further incident at 1807 local time.
As per reporting from The Aviation Herald, it is understood this was due to a bitter odour that was noticeable on the aircraft.
Finnair noted that the aircraft had returned due to a technical fault on the aircraft, confirming that issue.
Aircraft Performed Test Flight Earlier Today: Now Fixed…
Data from RadarBox.com highlights that OH-LTO, the Finnair Airbus A330 involved in the incident on AY15 Helsinki-New York performed a test flight earlier today.
This was presumably to ensure that the odour had not returned following maintenance fixes.
It appears that the go-ahead for a return to commercial service was given this afternoon.
This is due to the fact that at the time of writing, the aircraft is currently in-flight towards Doha, and is expected to land at 0028 local time.
It is understood over the next day or two, the aircraft will operate the following flights:
– AY1984 – Doha to Stockholm.
– AY1983 – Stockholm to Doha.
– AY1983 – Doha to Helsinki.
Since then, no additional incidents have been reported with the aircraft, with the issue presumed fixed at this time.
