Fiji Airways has announced a new direct route connecting Nadi, Fiji to Cairns, Australia starting April 10, 2025. The national carrier will operate flights three times weekly – on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays – using its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The new service strategically aligns with the airline’s Nadi-Dallas/Fort Worth schedule. This timing creates the fastest route between Cairns and Dallas. It offers travelers from Northern Australia quick access to North America through Fiji’s less congested Nadi hub.

The streamlined connection promises to revolutionize travel patterns for passengers heading to major North American cities.

Exploring Cairns

The Nadi-Cairns route opens exciting opportunities for both destinations. Cairns attracts visitors worldwide with its stunning Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, offering unforgettable experiences for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Meanwhile, Fijians gain easier access to Northern Australia’s attractions, and Australians can readily experience Fiji’s famous hospitality and natural beauty, fostering stronger tourism links between the two regions.

André Viljoen, Fiji Airways’ Managing Director and CEO, emphasizes the strategic importance of this expansion. “Our Cairns service strengthens our network and brings Northern Australia closer to our travelers. The route also provides efficient North American connections via Nadi, underlining our commitment to creating seamless travel experiences for our customers.”

Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker highlights the route’s significance. “This connection revolutionizes regional travel. It offers quick South Pacific access and reduces North American journey times by nearly three hours compared to routing through other Australian cities.”

“The benefits of Fiji Airways’ Oneworld membership and alignment with American Airlines make numerous North American markets easily accessible.”

Queensland Tourism Minister Andrew Powell projects substantial economic benefits from the new route. The service is expected to accommodate 26,593 inbound passengers annually, generating over $12 million in yearly visitor spending.

The initiative will create 130 peak employment opportunities, combining direct and indirect positions. Furthermore, the route establishes new channels for education, with improved access for Fijian students and their families. It also opens new opportunities for freight services, particularly benefiting fresh produce and seafood exporters.

North American Market Interest

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen notes strong North American market recovery, with 101,000 visitors recorded in the previous financial year.

Recent marketing campaigns have generated over $15 million in sales, with more initiatives planned, including a partnership with Fiji Airways targeting U.S. travelers.

The Federal Government’s International Tourism Recovery Program has played a crucial role in escalating marketing activities.  It has completed seven successful campaigns in the US and Canadian markets and an additional ten campaigns already contracted for future implementation.
