The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is making bold moves to strengthen air traffic control across the United States.

With a revamped hiring process, the agency says it is drawing in top talent to ensure the skies remain safe and secure.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has spearheaded efforts to accelerate the recruitment of air traffic controllers, slashing five months off the previous hiring timeline. The result appears to be a faster, more efficient system that the FAA says prioritizes skill and dedication.

FAA Reports ‘Strong Progress’

In the latest hiring window, which closed on 17 March 2025, the FAA has already seen strong progress. Over 8,320 candidates have been vetted and referred to take the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA). This is a critical aptitude test for aspiring controllers.

Beyond that, more than 190 individuals have already passed the exam and advanced into the hiring pipeline. These early successes signal a bright future for air traffic control staffing.

Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau was enthusiastic about the results. “I’m thrilled to see such promising outcomes from our efforts to supercharge air traffic controller hiring,” he said.

“By focusing on merit, cutting unnecessary delays, and boosting starting salaries, we’re attracting America’s best and brightest to this vital role at record speed.” His words reflect the FAA’s commitment to building a skilled workforce to meet the demands of modern aviation.

Starting Salaries Raised for ATC Trainees

This hiring surge is just one piece of the FAA’s broader mission to put safety first for all Americans. Beyond speeding up recruitment, the agency has raised starting salaries for trainees at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center Academy by 30 percent.

Graduates can look forward to rewarding careers, with certified professional controllers earning an average of over $160,000 annually. Those who score highest on the ATSA get priority placement at the Academy, ensuring the most capable candidates rise to the top.

Once training is complete, new controllers will join one of the FAA’s 313 facilities nationwide. There, they’ll work alongside seasoned professionals, gaining hands-on experience as they pursue full certification.

Conclusion

This streamlined approach not only saves time but also ensures that highly qualified individuals are on the job faster than ever before.

By modernizing its hiring process and investing in talent, the FAA is taking proactive steps to rectify a longstanding issue.

With thousands of candidates already in motion, the agency is well on its way to meeting the growing needs of air travel in 2025 and beyond.
