Eurowings, a key subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, is set to redefine its strategic approach to air travel from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) during the summer 2025 season.
This comprehensive expansion reflects the airline’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and meeting evolving traveler preferences.
Founded in 1994, Eurowings has transformed from a regional carrier to a significant player in the low-cost airline segment. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Group, the airline strategically bridges budget travel with the reliability of a major carrier.
The carrier has consistently focused on providing affordable, convenient travel options across Europe, with a particular emphasis on leisure and vacation destinations.
Network Enhancements
For summer 2025, Eurowings will offer an impressive 42 direct destinations, representing a significant boost to its existing network. The expansion includes four notable new destinations that broaden the airline’s geographical reach.
Spanish Destinations
- Bilbao: A cultural hub in the Basque Country
- Jerez de la Frontera: Known for its sherry production and equestrian traditions
Mediterranean Additions
- Corfu: A picturesque Greek island with rich historical significance
- Faro: The gateway to Portugal’s beautiful Algarve region
The newly added Newcastle route in northeast England further diversifies the airline’s European connectivity.
Existing Routes and Increased Frequencies
Eurowings is strategically increasing flight frequencies to several established destinations across Europe and beyond.
These include key vacation and business destinations such as Malaga in southern Spain, Heraklion on the island of Crete, the historic island of Rhodes, the Austrian city of Graz.
The French Riviera hub of Nice, the Greek island of Kos, the Croatian coastal city of Split, the Armenian capital Yerevan, and Erbil in northern Iraq will also see increases.
Mallorca remains the crown jewel of their route map, with an impressive 21 weekly flights, underscoring the island’s enduring popularity among travelers.
Eurowings CEO on Strategic Positioning
Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings, articulated the company’s forward-looking strategy. “Our expansion at BER represents more than just additional routes.”
“We’re creating a comprehensive travel ecosystem that connects Berlin with Europe and beyond, reinforcing the Lufthansa Group’s market leadership.”
This sentiment is echoed by industry partners. Aletta von Massenbach from Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH highlighted the broader economic implications, emphasizing how enhanced connectivity supports regional tourism and economic development.
Domestic Route Optimization
While expanding European routes, Eurowings is simultaneously recalibrating its domestic network. The airline will reduce domestic flights to Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Stuttgart by approximately 10%, a response to increasing operational costs and government charges. Nevertheless, the airline maintains critical connections with frequent daily services:
- Up to 7 daily flights to Stuttgart
- Up to 6 daily flights to Cologne/Bonn
- Up to 5 daily flights to Düsseldorf
This nuanced approach demonstrates Eurowings’ ability to balance growth, market demands, and economic realities.
Future Outlook
The summer 2025 expansion signals Eurowings’ continued commitment to innovative, customer-centric air travel. By diversifying routes, optimizing frequencies, and maintaining strategic flexibility, the airline is positioning itself as a key player in Europe’s aviation landscape.
The expansion from Berlin Brandenburg Airport is something of a strategic statement about Eurowings’ ambitions.
