Etihad Airways, the UAE’s national airline, is strengthening its presence in Africa by launching new destinations and increasing flight frequencies.
This expansion signals the airline’s interest in meeting the continent’s growing demand for better air connectivity.
Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, explained the strategy: “We’ve prioritized a stronger African presence for years. Recently, we’ve adopted a comprehensive plan to grow our fleet, add more flights, and build key partnerships.” These efforts are already yielding positive results, fueling further expansion.
Planned African Service Expansion
From 15 December 2025, Etihad will double its Nairobi, Kenya, flights to 14 weekly services, building on the route’s success since its relaunch less than a year ago.
Starting May 2025, the airline will also offer six weekly flights to the Seychelles in partnership with Air Seychelles. Additionally, Etihad will introduce daily Boeing 787 flights to Casablanca and Johannesburg, enhancing access to these vibrant cities.

Strategic Alliances Boost Connectivity
Etihad’s growth is powered by smart partnerships. A groundbreaking Joint Venture with Ethiopian Airlines will transform travel links between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
This includes a codeshare agreement that supports both passengers and cargo. Similarly, Etihad’s collaboration with Air Seychelles will provide seamless connections to exotic spots like Praslin and Mauritius via Mahe.
Travelers enjoy consistent baggage allowances, complimentary meals, drinks, and inflight entertainment. Etihad Guest members can also earn miles on these flights.
These alliances highlight Etihad’s dedication to Africa, creating a robust network that connects key markets efficiently.

Nairobi: A Dynamic Destination
Nairobi, dubbed the “Green City in the Sun,” is a thriving East African hub. It blends business energy with natural beauty, hosting Nairobi National Park within its limits—a rare urban wildlife reserve.
The city boasts cultural treasures like museums and art galleries and serves as a gateway to Kenya’s famous safari destinations. The increased flights to Nairobi reflect strong demand and the route’s growing popularity.

Conclusion
By December 2025, Etihad will significantly boost its African operations compared to December 2024. Four new direct routes from Abu Dhabi to African cities will strengthen the airline’s footprint. The recent addition of Addis Ababa, tied to the Ethiopian Airlines partnership, marks a major step forward.
Etihad’s focus on Africa taps into the continent’s dynamic potential. With an expanded network, modern fleet, and strong partnerships, the airline offers travelers greater convenience.
Whether for business trips or leisure adventures, Etihad makes exploring Africa’s vibrant cities and natural wonders easier.
This expansion cements Etihad’s role as a key player in African aviation.
