Etihad and Ethiopian Joint Venture: New Flights Between Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa

Etihad Airways and Ethiopian Airlines have entered a joint venture which will see the introduction of new flights between Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa later this year.

A landmark Joint Venture has been firmed between Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading carrier.

This strategic alliance, solidified at Ethiopian Airlines’ headquarters in Addis Ababa, promises to revolutionize travel between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

The new collaboration will see the launch of new services between Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabir later this year.

Scope of Joint Venture Agreement


This partnership includes a comprehensive codeshare arrangement, effectively expanding the reach of both airlines and offering passengers a wider array of travel options.

Crucially, the JV will introduce new direct flights connecting Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa, strengthening the vital link between these two dynamic regions.

Travelers can expect the launch of Ethiopian Airlines services from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) to Zayed International Airport (AUH) on July 15th.

Shortly after, on October 1st, Etihad Airways will commence daily flights to Addis Ababa. Subject to necessary regulatory approvals, this JV will facilitate collaborative efforts in developing and expanding routes between the UAE and Ethiopia.

By integrating their networks, Etihad and Ethiopian Airlines aim to create a more comprehensive and efficient travel experience across three continents.

Airline CEO Comments


Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, gave comment on the new collaboration. “This Joint Venture is great news for customers of both airlines.”

“The start of flights between the two great cities of Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabi connects our expanding networks. It gives our customers seamless access to a growing list of destinations via our extensive hubs.”

He also highlighted the potential for future collaboration, including frequent flyer programs, training, and cargo services.

Neves extended a warm welcome to Ethiopian travelers visiting Abu Dhabi. He highlighted the city’s diverse attractions, from pristine beaches and cultural landmarks to thrilling theme parks and serene desert landscapes.

Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, echoed this sentiment, expressing delight in entering into this strategic agreement.

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia,” he stated. “By leveraging our combined networks, we are committed to providing our passengers with greater travel convenience and exceptional service.”

Tasew also highlighted the partnership’s role in fostering strong bilateral relations and promoting economic growth between Ethiopia and the UAE.

Ethiopian Airlines UAE Presence


The launch of the Abu Dhabi route marks Ethiopian Airlines’ third destination in the UAE. It further solidifies the airline’s presence in the region. The carrier currently operates over 120 weekly passenger and cargo services to the Middle East and Gulf states.

Passengers can now seamlessly connect from major African destinations, such as Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Kinshasa, and Lusaka. They can access key cities in the UAE and Asia, including Etihad destinations in Pakistan and Southeast Asia. These include Colombo and Islamabad, as well as upcoming routes to Phnom Penh and Krabi.

Ethiopian Airlines will utilize its modern fleet, including the Boeing 777 and Airbus A350-1000, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.

From its hub at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, passengers can access a vast network of international and domestic destinations with smooth transit options.

Beyond its role as a transportation hub, Addis Ababa itself offers a wealth of cultural and historical attractions. Visitors can explore the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to the renowned fossil “Lucy,” and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the Merkato market.

This landmark partnership between Etihad Airways and Ethiopian Airlines represents a significant step forward in enhancing global connectivity, fostering economic growth, and providing passengers with unparalleled travel experiences.
