Etihad Airways has marked a further milestone in its global expansion strategy with the launch of a new service to Nairobi, Kenya.

Operating from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport, the inaugural service was flown on Sunday, 15 December 2024.

It provides a connection as commercial and cultural ties continue to grow between UAE and Kenya. The route becomes the tenth new destination in Etihad’s expanding 2024 network.

Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, explained the strategic decision for the new route during the inaugural flight. “This service is a testament to our commitment to connecting global markets and responding to emerging travel trends,” De stated.

“The completely full inaugural flight underscores the strong bilateral interest between the UAE and Kenya, highlighting the economic and cultural ties that continue to grow between our regions.”

Kenya’s Tourism Boom

The launch comes at a particularly opportune moment for Kenya’s tourism and economic landscape. The country is experiencing a remarkable tourism renaissance, with visitor numbers projected to reach 3 million in 2024.

More impressively, Kenya has set an ambitious target of attracting 5 million visitors in the coming years, reflecting the country’s growing appeal as a global destination. This strategic route from Etihad directly supports Kenya’s tourism aspirations, providing enhanced international connectivity and accessibility.

Etihad: Aggressive Network Expansion

For Etihad, the Nairobi service is part of an aggressive and strategic network expansion in 2024. The airline has already introduced services to a diverse range of destinations.

These include Antalya, Bali, Boston, Jaipur, Kozhikode, Mykonos, Nice, Qassim, and Thiruvananthapuram. The success of these routes demonstrates the airline’s ability to identify and capitalize on emerging market opportunities.

Looking forward, Etihad’s expansion plans for 2025 are even more ambitious. The airline has scheduled thirteen new destinations across multiple continents. European travelers can look forward to new routes to Warsaw and Prague in June, while North American connections will expand with Atlanta services in July.

The Asian market will see new routes to Taipei, Medan, Phnom Penh, and Krabi, and African connectivity will be enhanced with new services to Tunis, Hanoi, Hong Kong, and Algiers.

Abu Dhabi-Nairobi Highlights

The Abu Dhabi-Nairobi route is particularly noteworthy for its unique destination characteristics. Abu Dhabi continues to position itself as a world-class destination, offering visitors an extraordinary blend of ultramodern attractions and rich cultural heritage.

From the architectural marvel of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to the internationally renowned Louvre Abu Dhabi, the city provides a compelling mix of traditional and contemporary experiences.

Nairobi, equally fascinating, presents a remarkable urban landscape that defies typical city expectations. Known as the “Green City in the Sun,” it offers a unique proposition of urban sophistication merged with natural wonder.

The city’s most distinctive feature is perhaps Nairobi National Park—a wildlife reserve located within the city’s boundaries, offering visitors the extraordinary experience of seeing wildlife against a backdrop of modern city skyscrapers.

By connecting these two dynamic destinations, Etihad Airways responds to a growing cultural and commercial dynamic between the two nations.

It answers growing demand and creates new pathways for cultural exchange, tourism, and economic cooperation.
