Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and China Eastern Airlines have officially launched their new Joint Venture (JV).

The launch was formalised at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai this week. This collaboration strengthens ties between the UAE and China, enhancing travel options for passengers across both regions.

China Eastern Inaugural Flight

The launch coincided with the arrival of China Eastern’s inaugural flight, MU237, from Shanghai to Abu Dhabi on April 28. A warm welcome ceremony at Zayed International Airport marked the occasion.

The new route currently operates four weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Starting 12 September 2025, the service will increase to daily flights, improving connectivity between major Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi’an, and Kunming, and key destinations in the UAE, Middle East, and Africa.

A330 Flight Service

The China Eastern flight, operated on an A330 aircraft, offers a flight duration of approximately 9 hours and 20 minutes.

Passengers can enjoy high-speed inflight Wi-Fi, ensuring connectivity throughout their journey. The airlines are also collaborating on codeshare flights, joint marketing, and customer experience improvements to elevate the travel experience.

Integration of Loyalty Benefits

During the ATM event on April 29, the airlines signed an agreement to integrate their loyalty programs, Etihad Guest and Eastern Miles. From June 1, 2025, members can earn and redeem miles across both airlines’ global networks.

This partnership offers greater flexibility, rewarding frequent flyers with seamless travel experiences and enhanced value.

The Joint Venture, first announced in June 2024, is now fully operational. It combines the strengths of both airlines to create a robust network, offering passengers more travel choices and smoother connections.

This collaboration is the first of its kind between a Middle Eastern and a Chinese airline, setting a new standard for aviation partnerships.

Leadership Comments

Arik De, Etihad Airways’ Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, explained the significance of the partnership. “This Joint Venture with China Eastern is a game-changer for both airlines and the UAE-China relationship,” he said.

“By merging our networks and loyalty programs, we’re creating more options for travelers while fostering innovation and cooperation across our markets.”

Wan Qingchao, Executive Vice President of China Eastern, gave further perspective. “The Shanghai-Abu Dhabi route and our joint business with Etihad align with the Belt and Road Initiative,” he noted.

“With Zayed International Airport’s modern facilities, we’re enhancing transit capabilities and making travel more convenient for passengers.”

Summary

This Joint Venture marks a historic moment in aviation, being the first between a Middle Eastern and Chinese carrier. It paves the way for future bilateral agreements and strengthens economic and cultural ties between the UAE and China.

By aligning their operations, Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines create a seamless, and customer-focused travel network.

As the partnership grows, travelers can expect more frequent flights, enhanced loyalty rewards, and an improved travel experience.
