Emirates, true to its ‘Fly Better’ promise, has once again demonstrated its commitment to inclusive travel at the 6th AccessAbilities Expo in Dubai. The airline fielded a range of services and products at what is the largest exhibition for people with disabilities in the Middle East.

The event was officially opened by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group. It showcased a suite of innovative services and products designed to enhance the travel experience for People of Determination.

Innovative Solutions for Diverse Needs

At the forefront of Emirates’ presentation were several cutting-edge innovations:

Virtual Reality Airport Tour: This immersive experience allows passengers to familiarize themselves with Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3 before their journey, reducing travel anxiety.

Sign Language Robot: A technological marvel that interprets sign language to provide information and guidance to deaf or hearing-impaired travelers.

Wheelchair Cube: A new concept in mobility aid transportation, ensuring the safe and secure transport of wheelchairs during flights.

Be My Eyes App Integration: Emirates is set to become the first airline globally to integrate with this app, offering real-time video support for visually impaired customers.

Sensory Guide for Neurodivergent Travelers: Developed in collaboration with IBCCES, this infographic helps prepare neurodivergent passengers for their airport experience by detailing sensory stimuli levels.

Accessible Chauffeur Drive Service: A specially equipped Mercedes V250 Van featuring an electric wheelchair lift, currently available for First and Business Class customers in Dubai.

These innovations reflect Emirates’ enhanced focus on accessibility, formalized in 2024 with the introduction of the Emirates Accessibility Policy and the launch of the Office of Accessibility and Inclusion.

Revolutionizing In-Flight Experience

Emirates’ commitment to accessibility extends to the in-flight experience. The airline showcased various features designed to make air travel more comfortable for all passengers:

  • Noise-cancellation headphones, particularly beneficial for neurodiverse customers
  • Onboard wheelchairs for in-flight mobility
  • Mobility assistance devices like the scala combi, easyglide, and belt
  • Enhanced inflight entertainment system with closed captions and audio descriptions

The upcoming Airbus A350 aircraft will feature a user interface specifically designed for visually impaired passengers, further cementing Emirates’ position as a leader in accessible air travel.

Comprehensive Approach to Autism-Friendly Travel

Emirates has made significant strides in catering to travelers with autism and other cognitive disabilities.

The airline has achieved Certified Autism Center™ Designations for all four of its Dubai check-in facilities, aligning with Dubai International Airport’s recent recognition as the first international airport to earn this designation.

Multiple services are available to support neurodiverse customers throughout their journey, from pre-travel guides to priority routes through the airport. This initiative is part of a broader vision to make Dubai the first Certified Autism Destination™ in the Eastern hemisphere.

Digital Accessibility and Staff Training

Emirates also recognizes the importance of digital accessibility. It has applied the highest standard of web content accessibility guidelines to its website for the past decade. The airline website supports screen reader technologies and features a 3D viewing tool and seat map. This allowing customers to explore their seat and the aircraft in advance.

To ensure these innovations are supported by knowledgeable staff, Emirates has invested heavily in training.

Over 29,000 cabin crew and ground staff globally have completed the ‘Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities’ training. The airline is currently refreshing this content and plans to expand inclusivity training across all employees and partner providers.

Looking to the Future

The AccessAbilities Expo 2024 provided an ideal platform for Emirates to showcase its long-term development in accessibility services and connect directly with the Accessible Travel community in the region. The airline’s Innovation Lab continues to work on prototypes that could further benefit customers with accessibility requirements.

As air travel becomes increasingly accessible, Emirates is positioning itself at the forefront of this evolution. The airline is seeking to lift standards for inclusive travel. It looks to combine technological innovation with a deeper understanding of diverse passenger needs.

This is designed to flow from the moment a customer plans their journey on the accessible website. It continues through their experience at the airport, to their in-flight comfort and arrival at their destination.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, Emirates’ dedication to accessibility and inclusion serves as a benchmark for airlines worldwide. It is suggestive of a future where air travel is truly accessible to all.
