In a significant milestone for the air cargo industry, Embraer’s E190F E-Freighter has received full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
This approval, granted in September 2024, covers both the passenger-to-freighter conversion and the Cargo Loading System developed by U.S. Cargo Systems.
The E190F Freighter Program
The E190F program, launched in May 2022, aims to fill a gap in the air cargo market. It’s designed to replace older, less efficient models and meet the evolving demands of e-commerce and modern trade. These demands increasingly require fast, decentralized deliveries to regional markets.
Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer of Embraer Commercial Aviation, was enthusiastic about the manufacturer entering this market. He highlighted the E-Freighter’s ability to meet the growing global demand for faster deliveries, not just to metropolitan areas but to all regions.
The E190F offers significant capabilities:
- Over 40% more volume capacity than competitors
- Triple the range of large cargo turboprops
- Up to 30% lower operating costs than larger narrowbody aircraft
- Maximum structural payload of 13,500 kg (combining under-floor and main deck capacity)
The development of the E-Freighter involved a global effort. More than 40 suppliers and 600 employees dedicated over half a million hours to the project. This collaboration underscores the program’s complexity and importance.
Moving Forwards
Embraer launched the E190F program in May 2022. The first aircraft made its maiden flight in April 2024 and debuted publicly at the Farnborough Airshow in July 2024.
In July 2024, it received certification from ANAC in Brazil. The FAA has now certified it in September 2024. Following this key milestone, EASA certification is expected later in 2024.
With its FAA certification secured, the E190F is poised to transform regional air cargo operations. Its combination of efficiency, range, and capacity makes it an attractive option for operators looking to modernize their fleets and meet the demands of today’s fast-paced logistics environment.
