El Al B787-9 Tel Aviv-Newark Declares Emergency

El Al flight LY27, a B787-9 bound for Newark from Tel Aviv has declared an emergency and is now diverting to Paris (CDG).

An El Al Boeing 787-9 enroute from Tel Aviv to Newark has declared an emergency, squawking transponder code 7700.

El Al Israel Airlines flight LY27, operated by a Boeing 787-9, declared the emergency shortly after crossing the French coast. The flight is now on diversion to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG).

Flight LY27, bound for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), declared the emergency with transponder code 7700 as it passed through flight level FL340. The aircraft discontinued climb at that altitude before initiating the diversion.

0400 UTC: Diversion to Paris (CDG)


El Al flight LY27 is now established on a direct track for Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport. The nature of the emergency prompting the diversion is not yet known. Flight crew are maintaining the emergency transponder code 7700, at cruising level FL340.

0410 UTC: On Descent for Paris (CDG)


Flight LY27 has now left FL340 on descent, and is maintaining its direct track to the diversion airport Paris CDG.

Weather for the flight’s arrival is VFR, with visibility 10 kilometres or more and light winds. Active runways for arrivals are RWYs 08 and 09.

0422 UTC: Approach to Paris CDG


Flight LY27 is now on descent below 10,000 feet and under vectoring for a straight-in approach. Flight crew are maintaining transponder code 7700 for the landing.

0431 UTC: Landed Paris (CDG)


El Al flight LY27, originally bound for Newark (EWR) from Tel Aviv (TLV), has now landing at Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport, after declaring an emergency and diverting earlier today.

Unconfirmed reports suggest a medical emergency may have been the cause of today’s diversion. We will update this as more information comes to hand.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that El Al flight LY27 made an on-time departure from Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) at 0101 local time today.

The flight then set course normally for Newark, and was climbing through FL340 when the emergency was declared. The aircraft had crossed the French coast on flight plan track for Newark, NJ when the diversion was initiated.

Flight crew squawked transponder code 7700 at 0337 UTC.

The aircraft conducting today’s service from Tel Aviv was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered 4X-EDI. This is a 6.1 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the national carrier El Al Israel Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in January 2019.
