Edelweiss Flight to Ponta Delgada Suffers Bird Strike in Zurich

Earlier this week, an Edelweiss flight originally bound for Ponta Delgada suffered a bird strike not long after departure from Zurich.

Information has been released pertinent to the incident at hand, which we will get into in this article.

Edelweiss Flight WK280 – Zurich to Ponta Delgada…


Earlier this week, an Edelweiss flight originally bound for Ponta Delgada suffered a bird strike not long after departure from Zurich.

Edelweiss flight WK280, which suffered the bird strike, is a routine scheduled flight between Zurich and Ponta Delgada.

Furthermore, the aircraft involved in the incident was HB-IJW.

As per data from Planespotters.net, HB-IJW is a 20.8 year old Airbus A320 that started out life with February 2004.

By April 2014, the aircraft was handed over to Edelweiss, where it has remained since.

Moreover, of the A320ceo variant, the Swiss carrier has 14 of them in their fleet.

All of them are in active service, with an average fleet age of 20.9 years.

As well as the A320ceo, Edelweiss has five Airbus A340s in their fleet.

Edelweiss flight WK280, originally bound for Ponta Delgada, suffered the bird strike not long after the departure from Zurich at 0750 local time on September 9.

As per The Aviation Herald, it is understood the crew continued the climb despite this.

Furthermore, at 33,000 feet, the decision was eventually made to return back to the Swiss airport.

Edelweiss flight WK280, originally bound for Ponta Delgada, landed back into Zurich without further incident after three hours in the air following the bird strike.

Following the bird strike involving Edelweiss WK280 Zurich-Ponta Delgada, HB-IJW was grounded overnight for fixes.

The aircraft returned to commercial service on September 10.

Following the incident, it has operated flights to the likes of Olbia, Santorini and Antalya.

No further issues have been reported with the aircraft following this particular incident.
