Delta Air Lines will now transport a Russian woman who stowed away on a flight to Paris back to the United States.
The 57-year-old woman stowaway, a legal US resident, was initially scheduled to be returned on Tuesday 3 December. However, French authorities removed her from a Delta flight after she caused a disturbance. Subsequently, Delta declined to accommodate her on any of its flights.
According to a Paris airport official, the woman will now be returned to New York on a Delta flight on Wednesday 4 December.
Security Breach Raises Concerns
The incident has raised significant concerns about airport security. The woman managed to bypass multiple security checkpoints at JFK International Airport and board the plane without a ticket. It had been unclear just how she was able to evade detection, despite the stringent security measures in place.
Latest reports suggest that the woman managed to bypass mandatory checkpoints by blending herself in with groups travelling together.
The large number of passenger movements over the busy holiday weekend may also have contributed to the oversight.
Legal Ramifications and Diplomatic Implications
The woman is currently in French custody, and French authorities now plan to return her to the US with an escort. According to CNN, the woman will be escorted back to New York JFK International Airport by two French security officials.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is investigating the incident and may pursue civil charges against the woman.
This incident has potential diplomatic implications, as it involves a US citizen and a foreign government.
Delta Air Lines Stance
Delta Air Lines has not publicly commented on its decision to refuse transport. However, the airline’s stance underscores the seriousness of the incident and the potential risks associated with allowing disruptive passengers on board.
In light of this stowaway incident, there is a renewed focus on strengthening airport security measures. Experts suggest that additional security checkpoints, advanced screening technologies, and stricter baggage screening procedures may be necessary to prevent similar occurrences.
