Delta Flight DL1439 Boston-Tampa Declares Emergency

Delta Air Lines flight DL1439, a B737-900 departing for Tampa, declared an emergency after departure and returned to Boston earlier this afternoon.

A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Tampa from Boston made an emergency return to Boston Logan after declaring an emergency shortly after departure this afternoon.

Delta Air Lines flight DL1439, a Boeing 737-900ER, had conducted a departure from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service to Tampa International Airport (TPA).

The flight had established on course and was passing through Connecticut airspace when flight crew terminated the climb. Flight crew then squawked transponder code 7700 and commenced a return to the departure airport.

The nature of the emergency prompting the return is not yet known.

Following the Delta Air Lines emergency declaration, the flight continued a direct return to Boston Logan Airport before carrying out a landing on runway 33L. The flight crew maintained emergency transponder code 7700 for approach and landing priority.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that Delta flight DL1439 made a delayed departure out of Boston Logan at 17:38 local time on 6 April. Scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 16:00 local time.

Following departure, the flight had set course normally. Flight crew terminated the climb procedure at FL220 as the aircraft transited Connecticut airspace. A descent was initiated before the flight carried out a direct return to the departure airport.

Flight crew squawked transponder code 7700 at 21:55 UTC as the flight descended below 10,000 feet. The return and approach to Boston Logan International Airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the DL1439 service to Tampa International Airport was a Boeing 737-900ER, registered N811DZ. This is an 11.4 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2013.

According to the online source Flight Emergency, Delta Air Lines flight DL1439 declared an emergency and made a precautionary return to Boston due to a hydraulics problem.
