A Delta Airlines flight carrying members of the Carolina Panthers football team suffered a taxiway excursion at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) on August 9, 2024.
The incident occurred around 2:35 AM local time as the aircraft was taxiing after landing. It is understood that the flight was returning from a pre-season game in Rhode Island against New England. No injuries were reported among the 188 passengers on board as a result of the taxiway excursion.
Delta Air Lines DL8860 Providence-Charlotte
Delta Air Lines flight DL8860, operated by a Boeing 767-300ER, had landed after the domestic service from Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD).
Delta Air Lines confirmed that the right main gear of the aircraft left the taxiway, but did not specify the cause of the excursion incident. Early reports suggest the aircraft had completed a normal landing prior to the ground taxi incident.
Emergency services responded to the aircraft, and passengers including the Carolina Panthers team and associates were safely evacuated and transported to the terminal from the taxiway position. The airline apologized for the inconvenience caused by the incident and is currently investigating the matter.

The aircraft conducting the DL8860 service from Rhode Island was a Boeing 767-300ER, registered N182DN. This is a 31.8 year old aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in November 1992.
Flight data shows that Delta flight DL8860 departed from Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport at 00:55 local time on 9 August. The flight had then proceeded normally, climbing to FL360 (36,000 feet) for the return service to North Carolina.
The aircraft had conducted a normal approach and landing at the destination Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Weather at the time of the flight’s arrival was visual conditions (VFR).
