Delta Air Lines A330neo Returns to Atlanta After Engine Fire

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-900 departing for São Paulo, Brazil returned to Atlanta following an engine fire after takeoff on 1 January 2025.

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-900 departing for São Paulo, Brazil made a precautionary return to Atlanta following an engine fire after takeoff on 1 January 2025.

Delta Air Lines flight DL105, operated by an Airbus A330-900, had conducted a departure from Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The aircraft was performing a scheduled service bound for to (GRU).

Shortly after takeoff, flight crew reported an engine fire on the aircraft’s left-hand engine. As a result, they elected to make a precautionary return to the origin airport.

The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident, approximately 30 minutes after the flight’s initial departure.

Ground firefighting assets attended the aircraft after its landing. The flight had made a heavy landing, arising from the fact that there was insufficient time to perform fuel dumping before the return.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight DL105 had initially departed Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 1832 local time.

Following departure, the flight had climbed to 5000 feet before flight crew terminated the departure procedure. A direct return to the origin airport was then initiated.

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to carry out the scheduled service to São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport.

The aircraft conducting the DL105 rotation from Atlanta was an Airbus A330-900 (A330neo), registered N408DX. This is a 4.3 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in October 2020.
